Houghton, NY - The Mount Aloysius baseball team swept a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon as the Mounties defeated Hilbert College by scores of 6-1 and 12-5 on the road.
In game one,
Rodney Patterson controlled the Hilbert bats from start to finish as he threw a complete game allowing seven hits and one earned run while striking out seven in seven innings on the hill.
The Mounties got on the board in the top of the first when
Kyle Droz knocked in
Matthew McCourt with an RBI single. Two innings later, McCourt and Droz helped the Mounties increase the lead to 3-0 as McCourt drilled an RBI double scoring
Dalton Garlock and Droz followed with a single that brought around McCourt. McCourt then hit his conference-leading 10th home run of the season with a two-run shot in the fifth that increased the advantage to 5-0.
Vincent Jacob completed the Mountie scoring with an RBI double in the sixth that drove in
Patrick Jobes.
In game two, Hilbert jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Mounties scored four runs combined in the second and third innings.
Jordan Campano (single),
TJ Wardwell (triple) and Jacob (single) provided RBI hits in the second inning while Droz hit an RBI single in the third. Mount Aloysius increased its lead to 9-2 by the end of the sixth inning highlighted by a solo home run from Droz in the fifth inning.
The Hawks cut the deficit to 9-5 in the seventh inning, but Mount Aloysius responded with two runs in the top of the eighth as McCourt lasered a double to the gap to score Garlock and then came around when he stole third base before advancing home on an error. After Garlock hit an RBI double in the ninth to increase the lead to 12-5,
Luke Stultz retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth.
Droz also earned the win on the mound in game two as he threw six innings and allowed two earned runs. Offensively, Garlock went 4-for-6 with two runs scored, and
Chase Miller and
Daniel Singer added three hits apiece.
The Mounties improve to 3-5 in conference play and will return to action on Monday for a rescheduled non-conference game at home against Penn College. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
