Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius College men's soccer team scored a tremendous win on Saturday afternoon as they defeated conference opponent Medaille College in thrilling fashion by a final score of 4-3 in overtime.
This barn burner of a match evoked many shots (a combined total of 27), not to mention many fouls on both sides, requiring a single overtime period to decide a winner.
The Medaille Mavericks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before the Mounties cut the deficit in half with a goal as time came to a close in the opening half. Mount Aloysius jumped all over Medaille at the start of the second half. Senior forward
Graham Hunter found the back of the net on a rebound after a
Tevin Beadle shot rang off the crossbar. Minutes later,
Joshua Devlin would then give the Mounties a temporary lead as he cleanly netted a free kick from 30 yards out into the top left corner of the Medaille goal. The Mavericks would rally however with a goal of their own, sending the contest into overtime.
The game would ultimately be decided by Mountie midfielder
Jonathan Fernandez. Fernandez cleanly netted the game winner in stylish fashion just over a minute into the overtime period off of a pass from Beadle, shooting from the the left corner of the Medaille box into the right back-corner of the net.
With the conference victory, the Mounties improve to an impressive 7-0-1 overall (1-0 in conference). Mount Aloysius takes the field on Monday when the Mounties matchup with Saint Vincent on the road in non-conference action at 4 p.m.
