Hamburg, NY - The Mount Aloysius men's basketball team was edged by host Hilbert College by a final score of 62-57 on Saturday afternoon in AMCC action.
The Mounties stuck close to the Hawks throughout the contest. Neither team led by more than seven points in a low-scoring first half which saw the home side enter halftime with a 24-20 lead over the Mounties. In the second half of play, the Mounties took a 38-36 advantage with 11:47 to go on a three-point shot from
Josiah Jones before Hilbert responded with a 9-0 run to take a seven-point lead with 9:12 remaining in the ballgame.
With 3:44 left to go, Jones hit a jumper to cut the deficit to two points as Hilbert led 53-51. The game was 57-55 in favor of the Hawks with 47 seconds left after
Tommy Pisula hit a free throw. With 22 seconds left the Hawks hit a three-point shot, and a Mountie three-point attempt by
Jourdan Lamberth was off the mark with 13 seconds on the clock as Hilbert took the close victory.
Julian Stover scored 18 points and recorded four assists with two steals for the game, while Jones scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Trent McErlane was next in line in the scoring column for the Mounties with eight points.
The Mounties will return to the court Wednesday for an AMCC contest at home against Franciscan at 6 p.m.
