Dallas, PA- The Mount Aloysius Women's Basketball team traveled to the eastern half of Pennsylvania to play in the Sisters of Mercy Classic, hosted by Misericordia University. On Saturday they lost a high scoring game against Gwynedd Mercy 87-76 and Sunday lost a tough game to the hosts 92-44.
The Lady Mounties started off strong on Saturday, scoring 21 in the first period of play. The two teams traded baskets throughout the first, finishing with a
Hannah Kitko put back layup with 10 seconds to go to give the Mounties the lead after 1. The Mounties lost the middle two quarters, but finished strong, outscoring their opponents 18-16 in the final frame.
The Mounties scored a season high 76 points in the first game of the tournament.
Breana Kendrick (Broad Top City, PA/ Tussey Mountain) led the way with 20 while also hauling in 12 rebounds recording her second career double double.
Lea Sammarco (Patton, PA/Bishop Carroll) finished with 18 and
Rachel Robinson (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) had 17. Robinson had an efficient day from the field, shooting 75% from the field including 4 of 5 from three.
Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook,PA/Bishop McCort) had a strong game in the backcourt, scoring 6 points and dishing out 11 assists.
The Mounties came right back to action Sunday afternoon to take on the high-powered hosts, Misericordia. The Mounties were able to stay close to the Cougars through the first, with
Macy King (New Bethlehem, PA/Redbank Valley) banking in a shot to cut the lead to 1 late in the quarter. That was as close as the Mounties would come, as Misericordia would tack on 5 points in the final minute of the first, then dominated the second period, outscoring the Mounties 27-8.
Kendrick led the Mounties in scoring again, finishing with 15, while Sammarco chipped in 13.
Kendrick was named to the All-Tournament Team as she averaged 17.5 points per game and 8.5 rebounds. Kitko was represented Mount Aloysius as the Sisters of Mercy Award recipient for the team.
The Mounties (0-5) will begin their conference schedule when they travel to Penn-State Altoona on Wednesday. The game starts at 6:00 and will be followed by the Men's game shortly afterward. A fan bus is being provided for fans wishing to cheer on the Mounties away from home. The Bus will leave from Ihmsen Circle at 5:20PM
