Cresson, PA- The Mount Aloysius Women's Basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, as they defeated Medaille College 49-45.
Both teams got off to a slow start, but the Mounties took the early lead 2 minutes in.Â
Lea Sammarco (Patton, PA/Bishop Carroll) hit back to back threes and
Machala Gibbons (Cairnbrook, PA/Bishop McCort) followed with one of her own to put the Mounties up 8. The Mounties would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the first, but would lose the lead after Medaille went on a 9-0 run at the end of the first and beginning of the second. Both teams traded leads throughout the first half, but a
Macy King (New Bethlehem, PA/Redbank Valley) put back a lay up to give the Mounties a 5 point lead at the break.
Coming out of the half, the Mounties used a stingy defense and timely scoring to build a 16 point lead. The Mounties outscored the Mavericks 13 to 4 in the period. The Mavericks pressed the Mounties throughout the 4th quarter to cut the lead to 3.
Rachel Robinson (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) hit a shot in the lane to push the lead back to 5, and Gibbons converted two late free throws to preserve the win for the Mounties.Â
Gibbons finished with 14 points while grabbing 8 rebounds and dishing out 5 assists. Sammarco had 13 points, including hitting 3-6 from beyond the arc. King finished with a season high with 7 points and 6 rebounds in the victory.
The win marked the first of the year for the Mounties, as well as the first of Head Coach
Brian Giesler's career. Their record is now 1-6 and they will return to action on Wednesday at 6PM against AMCC foe Franciscan University.
