Buffalo, NY - The Mount Aloysius women's basketball team lost a tight 80-75 contest to host Medaille College on Saturday afternoon in an AMCC conference matchup.
The Mounties fell behind 25-15 with eight minutes remaining in the first half before storming back to take a 34-30 lead into halftime that was capped by a
Jessa Wright layup with 34 seconds to go in the half. In the second half, Medaille regained a 54-49 lead with two minutes to go in the third quarter before a quick 6-0 run handed Mount Aloysius a 55-54 advantage heading into the final quarter.
The two sides traded the lead throughout much of the fourth quarter, with Wright hitting a layup plus a free throw to give the Mounties a 71-70 lead with 1:03 left on the clock. The Mavericks responded with a three-point shot to take a 73-71 lead, and
Alexia Servello just missed a layup attempt on the Mount's next possession. The Mavericks then hit 7-for-8 free throw attempts in the closing moments to secure the win.
Wright was fantastic for the Mounties with 26 points on 10-for-17 shooting from the field and a 5-for-9 showing behind the three-point line while adding four steals. Servello scored 12 points and dished four assists, and
Lea Sammarco added 11 points off the bench.Â
The Mounties forced 28 Maverick turnovers while committing 16, but Medaille held a 43-25 advantage in the rebounding department.Â
The Mounties have clinched the #2 seed for the AMCC Tournamentd as they currently have a 13-3 conference record. Mount Aloysius would have to win Wednesday against Franciscan and have Hilbert College, the current #1 team in the conference, lose to Penn State Behrend on Wednesday for a chance at the #1 seed when the Mounties and Hawks meet next Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams.Â
