Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team lost their season opening game at home Wednesday night by a final score of 17-6.
The Mounties fell behind early, trailing 4-0 after 2 innings, but were able to strike back in the bottom of the second with a late inning 4-run rally. After a run scoring fielders choice, the Mounties used 3 consecutive 2-out singles from
Daniel Singer,
Matthew McCourt and
Chase Miller to tie up the game at 4.
Senior pitchers
Andrew Shreiner and
Tristan Gelvin kept the Mounties close with two strong innings of work in the third and fourth frames. Freshman right hander
Nick Lagnese also put in a solid inning of work in his Mount Aloysius debut, giving up one run, while striking out the side in the 5th.
Messiah was able to continue building their lead late in the game tacking on 11 runs in the last 4 innings, as the Mounties continued rotating pitchers each inning in the season's opening game.
Offensively, Mount Aloysius was paced by Singer, who finished the game with 2 hits, 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Transfer junior
Aaron Shinn also knocked in a run in his first game as a Mountie.
The baseball team will get right back to action this weekend with a three game series at Emory and Henry. They will play a double header on Friday, with game one starting at 12:00 PM. They will wrap up the series with a single nine inning game on Saturday, also scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM.
