Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius men's basketball team led by 12 points with three minutes remaining, but Penn State Altoona stormed back to force overtime and won 79-76 on Thursday evening in conference action.
Mount Aloysius led 66-54 after
Josiah Jones hit two free throws with 3:03 left in regulation. Altoona trimmed the lead to five at 66-61 a minute later, and the Mountie lead was 68-65 with 1:09 on the clock after two Altoona free throws.
Azim Hutson pushed the Mountie lead back to three with a driving layup with 59 seconds on the clock, and Altoona responded with two more free throws with 47 seconds left to trim the Mountie lead back to a single point. After both sides failed to score, Altoona hit 1-for-2 at the line to tie the game with 26 seconds left.
Julian Stover missed a three-point shot for the win and Altoona's full-court heave was just off the mark as the sides headed into overtime.
In the extra period, the sides stayed close throughout and the Lions held a 77-76 lead when Stover and
Troy Williams both had shot attempts fall off the rim with 18 seconds to go. After the Lions hit 1-for-2 at the line, the Mounties had two chances to tie it on shots from Hutson and Williams just before the buzzer but were unable to convert.
Stover scored 23 points offensively and added eight rebounds, while
Tommy Pisula recorded a double-double effort of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jones scored 15 points off the bench and Hutson contributed 11 points.
The Mounties fall to 5-10 in conference play and return to the court Saturday at 1 p.m. against Medaille on the road.Â
