Latrobe, PA -Due to some mid-March snow in Cresson, the Mount Aloysius Baseball team hosted Thiel College at Graham-Sobota Field, on the campus of Greater Latrobe Area High School. The Mounties took game one by a final of 13-3 and lost game 2 by a final score of 10-7.
Game one saw
Andrew Shreiner start for the Mounties. He would give up one run to start the game, but quickly received some run support in the bottom half of the opening frame. After
Dalton Garlock reached on an error, and Dan Singer walked,
Matthew McCourt drilled a long home run over the left field wall to give the Mounties a 3-1 lead. They would add to their lead in the 3rd inning when
Sam Keibler and
Jeremy Iellimo had clutch two-out RBI singles to bring the Mounties lead to 5-1.
Shreiner battled through five innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out eight to earn his first win of his senior campaign. Freshman
Dylan Coyle also gave a strong effort in the last two innings, working around two walks and an error to keep Thiel at bay.
The Mounties would tack on eight unanswered runs in their last three at bats. In the 4th, Singer singled home two runners and McCourt would follow that with his second home run of the game. The Mounties would wrap up their scoring in the bottom of the 6th as
TJ Wardwell doubled home two and
Chase Miller would drive in the last two runs of the game. Mount Aloysius finished the game with 14 hits, with each player recording at least one hit.
Game two did not go as well for the Mounties. Mount Aloysius pitching would allow three home runs in the night cap, two of them scoring three runs each. The Mounties did receive a strong pitching performance from
Douglas Cannon, as he kept the Thiel bats quiet for the final two and a third, allowing one unearned run on two hits while striking out four.
Down 9-3 in the 5th inning the Mounties did attempt a comeback late in the game. They would cut the lead to 4 in the 5th inning on RBI singles from Iellimo and Wardwell. In the 6th they would claw back two more, as
Joe Hudak hit his first career home run on a long blast over the left field wall and Keibler had a clutch two-out single to right. After giving up the lone unearned run in the 7th, the Mounties were unable to complete the final comeback in the 7th.
With the split the Mounties record now sits at 2-13. They are scheduled to head back to the Latrobe area on Tuesday as they will visit Saint Vincent College, and will begin AMCC play next Saturday against Pitt Bradford.
