Cresson, PA - After a lengthy layoff due to weather, the Mount Aloysius baseball team opened their AMCC conference season with a sweep of D'Youville College on Saturday. They won the first game 7-6 on a walk-off hit in extra innings and took the second game by a final of 15-2.
After D'Youville scratched across a run in the 1st off
Andrew Shreiner, the Mounties struck right back, scoring one run in each of the first four innings of the game. The Mountie runs were driven in by
TJ Wardwell and
LesPaul Buchko on singles and
Dalton Garlock and
Matthew McCourt on doubles. Shreiner got into a little trouble in the 5th inning, allowing D'Youville to cut the lead to 1. His final line read 4 and 2/3 innings pitched, allowing two earned runs on three hits and four walks.
Nick Lagnese would enter the game to get out of the jam in the 5th.
After Lagnese was tagged for two runs,
Douglas Cannon would enter in the 6th, allowing one more unearned run to bring the score through 6 and a half innings to 6-4 in favor of D'Youville. The Mounties bats would strike back to tie the game in the 6th as
Joe Hudak doubling in the first run and then scored on a
Sam Keibler single. Cannon would keep the Spartans scoreless as the game headed into extra innings giving the Mounties two chances at a walk-off win.
After coming close in the 7th, the Mounties would finish off the win in the first extra frame. After Hudak led off the 8th inning with a walk, McCourt and Keibler hit back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout Nick Belka singled home the winning run giving the Mounties the 7-6 victory.
Cannon picked up his first win as a Mountie, pitching the final two and 2/3 innings, allowing only one unearned run on three hits and no walks. Hudak and Keibler led the offense for the Mounties. After entering in the third inning Hudak reached base all three times he came to the plate and scored three of the Mounties runs. Keibler finished with three hits, scoring one run and knocking one in.
Game two continued the trend of strong freshman pitching for the Mounties.
Dylan Coyle picked up a win in his first start, allowing one earned run on six hits and two walks over five strong innings.
Cole Funk also finished the game strong, shutting down the Spartans for the two final frames.
The Mountie offense continued their hot hitting in game two. Every starter recorded a hit for the Mounties, as they totaled 17 hits for the game with six of them going for extra bases. Belka,
Chase Miller and
Jeremy Iellimo all recorded multiple hits in the game, and drove in three runs each. Senior
Dalton Garlock capped off the day for the Mounties as he blasted his first career home run deep to left field in the 4th inning.
The two wins move the Mounties record to 4-13 overall and 2-0 in conference play. They will play non-conference foe Juniata College on Tuesday, and return to conference action later in the week as they will visit LaRoche College on Wednesday and travel to Buffalo to face Medaille College over the weekend.
