Myrtle Beach, SC - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team picked up its first win of the season in dramatic fashion on Tuesday in a 12-10 victory over Penn College.
The final two innings of the game saw the Mounties lose a five-run lead in the 8th inning before striking back in the top of the 9th with 4 runs of their own.
Mount Aloysius struck quickly in Tuesday's contest, scoring two runs in the first on a
Matthew McCourt double and a
TJ Wardwell RBI ground out. The Mounties then padded their lead in the next two innings as
Sam Keibler and
Daniel Singer each hit home runs over the left field fence to lead off each frame.Â
Southpaw
Creek Miller started the game for the Mounties and was solid for the first seven innings. Miller allowed two runs through the first seven frames, but tired in the 8th. In his final statline he allowed six earned runs on nine hits, while issuing five walks and striking out seven. The Mounties bullpen was unable to put out the fire in the 8th as Penn rallied to take an 8-7 lead into the 9th inning.Â
Now down one run, the Mounties needed a rally of their own and found it in the bottom half of their line up. After McCourt flied out to deep right center, Wardwell walked and
Nicholas Belka drove a double into the same right center gap. Wardwell scored the tying run on a passed ball before Keibler stepped up again, driving in the go ahead run on a line drive, opposite field double off the wall. Seniors
Chase Miller and
Dalton Garlock continued the rally with a clutch two-run single and another double off the left field wall respectively.Â
The extra runs driven in by Miller and Garlock turned out to be huge, as the bullpen got into a jam in the last of the ninth, allowing two runs before they could record an out. With one runner on and a two-run lead,
Nick Lagnese came into the game and shut down the Wildcats offense. Lagnese got one ground out and finished the game with two strikeouts to earn his first collegiate save.
The Mounties are now 1-8 will return to action on Thursday the 8th, in a doubleheader against Penn State Harrisburg, starting at 12:00 PM.
