Baseball Swept in Doubleheader by Penn State Harrisburg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Myrtle Beach, SC - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team struggled in a pair of games against Penn State Harrisburg Thursday, losing the first game 7-0 and the second 7-1.

The Mounties sent Tyghe Bowers to the mound in game one. Bowers would run into trouble early, giving up a two-run blast in the first frame. He would go on to give up all seven runs in his three innings of work, however only four of them would be earned.

The Mount Aloysius bats also struggled in game one, as they were only able to muster two hits. TJ Wardwell drove a one-out double down the right field line in the 4th, but was not driven in with the remaining two outs in the inning. The Mounties did threaten to score in the 6th, as Matthew McCourt was hit by a pitch and Nicholas Belka singled through the left side. However, they were unable to string any more hits together to knock in the run.

One of the lone bright spots for the Mounties was the work of Ryan McElwee and Dylan Coyle out of the bullpen. McElwee would go two innings for the Mounties, allowing just two runners on via a walk and hit by pitch, but not giving up any hits or runs. Coyle would come on to pitch the bottom of the 6th, allowing a lead off single, but getting out of the inning unscathed, striking out the next batter and then getting an inning ending double play.

Andrew Shreiner would take the ball in game two. Shreiner had some success against most of the Harrisburg lineup, amassing seven strikeouts in his five innings of work, but did allow three home runs in the game. Douglas Cannon would allow a run on two hits while striking out two in the 6th. Luke Stultz had a successful seventh, retiring three of the four batters he faced with the only runner coming on a hit batter.

The Mounties struggled again offensively, but were able to claw across a run in the 2nd frame. After Sam Keibler and Jeremy Iellimo recorded back-to-back two out singles, Chase Miller walked to load the bases. Freshman Ryan Leonard, in his first start as a Mountie, would drive in the lone run by drawing another two-out walk to score Keibler from third.

Mount Aloysius will conclude their Spring Break Trip tomorrow. They will take on the Catholic University of America for a seven-inning contest. The game was originally supposed to start at 3:00 PM, but has since been moved up to a 12:30 PM start.
