Greensburg, Pa - The Mount Aloysius baseball team suffered two defeats at the hands of AMCC foe Pitt Greensburg on Wednesday by final scores 12-6 in game 1 and 9-6 in game 2. While the Mounties showed some signs of life offensively, they struggled on the mound as they allowed 21 runs in the two games including six home runs.
The Mounties got off to a good start at the plate in game 1, as Nick Belka put the Mounties in front early, singling in the opening run through the right side of the infield. Pitt-Greensburg would strike right back off of
Andrew Shreiner as they were able to load the bases and Chris Common capped off the inning with a Grand Slam over the right field wall. Shreiner would hold Pitt-Greensburg quiet for the next few frames as the Mounties were able to crawl back into the game, eventually grabbing the lead in the 5th. Belka would add two more RBI singles in the 3rd and 5th innings.
The Mounties were unable to hold the lead over the last three innings as they allowed three home runs in the last two Greensburg at-bats, driving in 7 runs. Shreiner took the loss for the Mounties, allowing 8 earned runs over 4 plus innings of work. Offensively, Belka finished the game 3-4 with 4 RBIs.
Sam Keibler also finished 3-4 and scored 2 runs.Â
Game 2 saw Mount Aloysius jump out in front again, on another Belka RBI single. Pitt-Greensburg struck back again, scoring 6 runs in two innings off of sophomore left hander
Creek Miller. Fellow sophomore
Michael McCourt and freshman
Nick Lagnese kept the Mounties within striking distance, allowing 3 combined runs over the final 6 and 2/3.
The Mount Aloysius comeback attempt did see the Mounties hit three homers of their own. Outfielder
Joe Hudak hit a home run to cut the lead to 4 in the 4th. Freshman
Jeremy Iellimo hit a home run to left in the 7th, marking his first in a Mountie uniform. Down 6 in the last inning, shortstop
Matthew McCourt blasted a home run to left field, his 5th of the year, to cut the lead in half. After the home run, the Mounties were able to load the bases and bring the go ahead run to the plate, but were unable to tack on any more runs.Â
The Mounties will have a busy week as they will compete in 3 more doubleheaders over the next 4 days. They will head to Juniata College on Thursday, and then host Hilbert College on Saturday and Pitt Bradford on Sunday.Â
