Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team won two games on a beautiful afternoon Saturday over AMCC foe Hilbert College, by scores of 9-7 and 13-8.
The Mounties fell behind early, as freshman starter
Dylan Coyle gave up runs in each of the first two frames, but were able to fight back and tie the game on a
Chase Miller single and a bases loaded walk to
Jeremy Iellimo. After falling behind in the top of the third, Mount Aloysius rallied in their half of the third. The Mounties put up three runs in the frame, executing on three suicide squeeze bunts in the inning.
Douglas Cannon entered the game in the 4th, and was able to retire the Hawks after allowing an inherited runner to score. In the bottom of the fourth the Mounties put up another three runs, this time via the long ball.
Matthew McCourt led off the inning with a long blast down the left field line. After cleanup hitter
Sam Keibler singled to center,
Nicholas Belka drove a hanging breaking ball over the wall in left, marking his first career home run.
Cannon would allow a few more runs over the final two innings, but was able to hold Hilbert in check and get his second win of the season. Belka, Keibler and junior
Daniel Singer each finished the first game with two hits.
The Mounties jumped off to an early lead in game two as McCourt drilled an RBI double down the line, and then scored on another squeeze play, this time from rightfielder
Joe Hudak. Senior
Tyghe Bowers had a strong start for the Mounties, as he used a dominating fastball to keep the Hawks at bay. Bowers allowed three runs, two of them earned, on five hits while striking out eight over 5 and two thirds innings.
Bowers picked up a tough luck no decision as the Mounties offense awoke after he had exited the game. After a runner interference call gave Hilbert a double play to start the 6th, the Mounties saw 7 straight batter reach base, scoring four runs in the inning.
Cole Funk, who had entered the game in the top of the 6th, kept Hilbert at bay as the Mountie offense continued to open up a 10-run lead. The big blow late in the 8th came off the bat of Hudak, as he drove a ball deep into the right center gap, scoring two runs. After the right fielder bobbled the ball against the fence, Hudak was able to scramble home to finish off the three-run play.
Hilbert would tag Funk for four unearned runs in the 9th to close the gap, but Funk shut the door after a two-out grand slam to pick up his first collegiate win. The Mounties 13 runs came on 14 hits, but the offensive star of the game was senior leftfielder
Dalton Garlock, who finished the game 4-for-6 with three doubles, three RBIs and a run scored.
The wins moved the Mounties to to 6-17 on the year with a 4-2 record in AMCC play. They will continue play tomorrow morning as they will host Pitt Bradford beginning at 10:00 AM.
