Cresson, PA -Â The Mount Aloysius Baseball team fell by a score of 17-11 Sunday morning against the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. What was to be the first of two games was played in heavy fog, resulting in the nightcap being postponed until a later date.
Andrew Shreiner started the game for the Mounties and allowed three runs over the first three frames, while using an effective change up to strike out five batters. As the fog rolled in during the 4th, Shreiner and two relievers ran into trouble, allowing 10 runs in the frame as Bradford used one home run and a mix of singles and three errors to open up the game. Bradford was then able to tack on three unearned runs in the 6th inning, pushing their lead to 17-2.
The Mounties were able to attempt a comeback in the late innings against the tiring Pitt-Bradford starter. After the leadoff batter grounded out, eight consecutive Mounties recorded hits, including three doubles. Mount Aloysius pushed across seven runs in the inning and cut the lead to 17-9. The Mounties would continue their comeback attempt in the 7th after
Scott Schultz was able to complete a strong relief appearance, shutting down Pitt-Bradford in the 7th. The bottom of the Mountie lineup continued to produce as they were able to plate two more runs via a
Joe Hudak triple and a
LesPaul Buchko single to cut the deficit to 17-11.Â
Despite struggling through the early part of the game.
TJ Wardwell and Buchko each finished the game with three hits. Hudak had the only other multi-hit game, as he finished with two hits and three runs batted in.
The Mounties record now stands at 6-18. The second game against Pitt-Bradford officially postponed due to heavy fog, has yet to be rescheduled. Mount Aloysius is scheduled to travel to Williamsport, PA to face Penn College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday.
