St. Bonaventure, NY - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team swept a conference doubleheader against Alfred State on Sunday as they won by scores of 4-3 and 16-5.
Game 1 was a tight pitchers duel, which the Mounties won by a final score of 4-3. In his first career start,
Douglas Cannon pitched the first complete game for the Mounties this season. Over his 7 innings pitched, Cannon allowed three earned runs, scattered five hits and walked one batter. The win moved Cannon's record to 3-1 on the season. He allowed two runs in the first, one in the fourth, then retired the last 10 batters he faced to secure the victory.
Offensively the Mounties runs came early. After
Jeremy Iellimo was hit by a pitch to lead off the game,
Nicholas Belka doubled to right center to put two runners in scoring position.
Matthew McCourt and
TJ Wardwell were able to drive in the runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI groundout to put the Mounties in front. The Mounties also scratched two runs across in the third. Wardwell knocked a double down the left field line to score the first run, and
Daniel Singer hit another sacrifice fly to score the second. McCourt was the only Mountie to record multiple hits, while Belka scored two runs and Wardwell drove in two.
Game two got off to a much slower start as starting pitching held both teams quiet through the first three and a half innings.
Nick Lagnese started for the Mounties, and was able to wriggle out of trouble unscathed through the first three innings. He was almost out of a jam again in the 4th, but a two-out double scored three runs to put the Mounties behind. Mount Aloysius was able to get the runs right back in the 5th with a big rally of their own. After two walks to start the inning, Belka doubled again to score the first run. The double was followed up by a run scoring on a wild pitch, followed by an RBI triple from McCourt to tie the game at three. Singer then dropped down a clutch suicide squeeze bunt to put the Mounties in front.
Lagnese was in trouble again following the big inning, allowing the first to batters to hit safely.
Michael McCourt came into the game and was able to wriggle out of trouble allowing one of the inherited runners to score. McCourt would finish the game from there, as the Mounties offense worked to build up a big lead.
Michael McCourt finished with five innings pitched to get the win, allowing one run to score on three hits and a walk. It was his first win of the season.
The Mount Aloysius offense was able to continue to score for the rest of the game, putting up runs in all the following innings, including 7 in the 9th frame. Belka finished the second game 2-for-5 with three runs scored and three runs batted in.
Matthew McCourt finished game two 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs and knocking in two more. For the day he finished 5-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
The two wins moves the Mounties to 8-20 on the year with a conference record of 6-5. The Mounties are scheduled to play nine games this week, with six of them coming against conference opponents. The week starts with a home game against Penn College on Monday at 4 p.m.
