Mounties Come Back from 11 Run Deficit to Defeat Penn College

Box Score
Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team used an 11-run 5th inning to erase an early deficit to earn their 9th win of the season with a 16-13 comeback victory over non-conference opponent Penn College on Monday afternoon.

The Mounties struggled on the mound and at the plate early in the game as Penn College built up an early 11-0 lead. Sophomores Creek Miller and Alex Arone worked through an early barrage from Penn College, allowing 13 hits to score the 11 runs, 8 of which were earned. The rest of the Mountie bullpen were able to quiet the Wildcat bats as they allowed just two runs over the final 5 and 2/3 innings.

The Mounties were unable to record a hit on the first turn through the lineup while Penn built their lead, however the offense would wake up in a big way. After threatening to score in the fourth, the Mounties put up their biggest inning of the season in the 5th. After catcher Patrick Jobes led off with a single through the left side, the next six batters would reach safely before Penn College could record an out.

Aided by four errors in the inning, the Mounties had scratched across eight runs when sophomore Matthew McCourt strode to the plate with runners on the corners. Early in the count, McCourt smoked a line drive that didn't land until it was long past the left field fence, tying the game at 11. Each Mountie in the lineup batted twice in the inning, collecting seven hits and five free passes.

After Scott Schultz was able to get Mount Aloysius out of a jam in the 6th, the offense would stay hot in the bottom half of the inning. Jeremy Iellimo broke the tie with a single to left to bring in Trevor Miller. Penn College pitching nearly got out of the inning with limited damage, but Daniel Singer hit a clutch two-out single to push the Mountie lead to three. A few pitches later senior outfielder Dalton Garlock hit his second home run of the season to deep left field to put an exclamation point on the inning.

Shultz went on to pitch two more innings, limiting the Wildcats to two runs. His performance earned him his 1st win of the season and his career. Aaron Shinn came in for the 9th, slamming the door with a 1-2-3 inning to earn his first save as a Mountie.

Every Mount Aloysius starter collected at least one hit in the game, but Iellimo Singer and Jobes stood out. Iellimo finished with four hits on the day, while scoring three runs and driving in two more. Singer had three hits, and also reached base on a walk. Jobes reached base 4 of the 5 times he came two bat, collecting two hits and two walks.

The win puts the Mounties overall record at 9-20. They will face Penn State Altoona on Wednesday at home in an AMCC conference doubleheader starting at 1pm.
