Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team lost two games to conference rival Penn State Altoona on Thursday.The Mounties fell by a score of 16-8 in Game 1 and 10-7 in Game 2.
The Mounties started game 1 quickly. After starter
Tyghe Bowers put down the Lions in order in the first inning,
Matthew McCourt hit a long 2-run home run in the bottom half to give the Mounties a 2-0 lead. Altoona was able to come right back in the second, scoring four runs on two hits and three walks. After Altoona was able to push another run across in the third, McCourt would come up big again, hitting a long blast into center field for his second home run of the day to tie the game at 5.Â
Penn State Altoona took over from there, putting up 11 runs in the final three frames off of the Mountie bullpen. Mount Aloysius was able to push a few runs across late as
Jeremy Iellimo knocked in a run on a fielders choice and
Daniel Singer and
TJ Wardwell had back-to-back extra base hits in the final inning to drive in runs.
Game 2 started as a pitchers battle, but saw a late flurry of action to push the final score to 10-7.
Dylan Coyle started for the Mounties and had a strong outing. Over the first six innings Coyle allowed two runs, scattering six hits while striking out four. Coyle was lifted in the 7th after a leadoff walk and a double down the left field line. Both runners would go on to score, completing Coyle's statline with four earned runs over 6+ innings.Â
The Mounties were able to start the scoring in the third inning. After loading the bases,
Aaron Shinn broke from third base as the Penn State Altoona pitcher began his wind up, and slid in safely to put the Mounties up one. Dan Singer followed this with a line drive double into the left center gap to score two more. The Mountie offense would scratch across four more runs in the game, coming on another Singer hit, a dropped fly ball in right field, a
Joe Hudak single in the 7th and a
Jeremy Iellimo single in the 8th. Iellimo, McCourt, Singer and Shinn all finished the game with multiple hits with Singer finishing with 3 RBIs.
The Mounties now have a record of 9-22 and 6-7 in conference play. The Mounties will have some important conference games through the weekend all with conference playoff implications. Keep an eye on the team schedule page, as their slate may change due to weather.
