Erie, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball team was swept in a doubleheader against Penn-State Behrend in AMCC action on Sunday. They fell in game 1 by a score of 10-3 and by a final of 11-4 in game 2.
The Mountie bats struggled in game 1 as they faced off against Behrend's ace. They were only able to muster two hits in the game, while striking out 14 times in the seven-inning contest. The two Mountie hits were a
Matthew McCourt double in the first and an
Aaron Shinn double in the 3rd. The Mounties were able to push across three runs late in the game on two errors a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from
Daniel Singer in the 6th, and three walks and a wild pitch in the 7th.
On the mound
Nick Lagnese started for Mount Aloysius, allowing six earned runs over four innings pitched.
Austin Steedle pitched the final two frames for the Mounties allowing four runs on five hits while striking out three.
Game 2 saw Mount Aloysius jump out to an early lead. After starter
Andrew Shreiner was able to get out of a jam in the first only allowing one run, the Mountie offense struck right back. Singer reached on an infield single to lead off the inning, and
TJ Wardwell was able to knock him in with a double down the left field line. Wardwell scored later on in the inning on a double steal. The Mounties doubled their tally in the 4th. Wardwell started the rally as he was hit by a pitch with one out. After outfielder
Joe Hudak reached on an error,
Dalton Garlock laid down a sacrifice bunt to get the runners in scoring position.
Jeremy Iellimo came through again with a clutch two-out, two-RBI single to left field to push the lead to three runs. Iellimo led the Mounties offensively, finishing the game with three hits.
Shreiner did well through five innings, allowing two runs while scattering eight hits. He ran into trouble in the sixth however, allowing three of the first four batters of the inning to reach before being lifted.
Scott Schultz was unable to get out of the jam as he faced the meat of the Behrend order, allowing a walk, a double and a single. He was replaced by
Cameron Domblisky in the inning, who was able to limit further damage, allowing one inherited runner to score. Behrend tacked on three more runs in the late innings against the Mountie bullpen as the offense was unable to answer.
Mount Aloysius (9-24) will be right back in action tomorrow, as they stay in the Lake Erie region to face Medaille College. The doubleheader, which is loaded with playoff implications, will begin at 1pm.
