Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius baseball season ended in dramatic fashion on Tuesday. After celebrating their eight graduating seniors, the Mounties fell 21-17 to Pitt-Bradford in a game which was a must win to keep playoff hopes alive. The nine-inning game was the second game of a doubleheader from earlier in the season which had to be postponed due to heavy fog.
Senior
Tyghe Bowers started for the Mounties and ran into trouble early through no fault of his own. Pitt-Bradford scored six runs in the first frame, all scoring after two fly balls dropped in the outfield for errors. Bowers settled down after that. He shut down the Bradford offense for the next four innings while the Mounties attempted a comeback. He was removed in the sixth inning after giving up three consecutive extra base hits including a home run which was nearly robbed by center fielder
Daniel Singer.
Ryan McElwee got out of the sixth inning and threw two more scoreless frames for the Mounties.
After giving up six runs in the first the Mounties were able to cut the deficit in half immediately. Back-to-back walks to start the inning were followed by an RBI single through the left side by
Matthew McCourt. A batter later, senior
TJ Wardwell drove a double to the left center gap to score two more. An inning later, McCourt came up big again as he hit a long three-run home run to tie the game at 6. The home run was his league leading 12th of the year. The Mounties took the lead later in the inning on a sacrifice fly from another senior,
Chase Miller.Â
The Mounties continued to use the long ball to score as McCourt led off the 4th inning with a home run and Singer homered down the line to bring the Mountie lead to 4. After Pitt-Bradford scored their three runs to chase Bowers in the 6th, the Mounties pushed one across in the bottom of the 6th on a
Joe Hudak RBI single. They built an even bigger lead in the 7th inning when seven consecutive Mounties reached base with one out, with five of them scoring to build up a late 7-run lead.
Mount Aloysius was feeling good heading into the final frame but Pitt Bradford put up a huge inning to win the game. They scored 12 runs on eight hits, three errors and three walks off of four different Mountie relievers. After entering the inning up seven runs the Mounties came to bat in the last of the 9th down by 5 runs. Senior
Patrick Jobes was able to drive in one run, however the Mounties were unable to complete one last comeback as the final out was recorded McCourt on deck as the tying run.
The Mounties finish the year 10-26 with a conference record of 7-11. They will finish in a tie for seventh place, just outside of playoff contention.
