Greensburg, PA - The Mount Aloysius Basketball team picked up its 4th win of the season on Wednesday night, defeating Pitt-Greensburg by a score of 67-57. In the game, Senior
Breana Kendrick (Broad Top City, PA/Tussey Mountain) broke the 1,000 point barrier. With 6:55 to go in the second, Kendrick hit an open three from the left wing which was her 9th point of the game and 1,000th in a Mountie uniform. Kendrick became the 6th player in program history to reach the milestone and the first since Lindsy Sammarco during the 2013-14 season.
In the first period, Kendrick got the Mounties started, scoring the first 5 points of the game. After
Lea Sammarco (Patton, PA/Bishop Carroll) hit a three to push the lead to 5, the Mounties went on a 4 minute scoreless drought that so their opponents, Pitt-Greensburg scored 12 straight. Mount Aloysius was able to respond in the final minute of the quarter as
Rachel Robinson (Leola, PA/Conestoga Valley) hit a three and Kendrick followed that up with a three at the buzzer to put the Mounties down 1. Mount Aloysius continued the run in the second, as they started the period on a 8-2 run to build a 5 point lead, finishing with the milestone three from Kendrick. The Mounties added a few baskets in the remainder of the period, however the Bobcats scored the final 7 points of the half, restoring their 2 point lead before the break.
The Mounties came out firing after the break, as Sammarco hit another three and Kendrick added a lay-up to give the Mounties the lead. After a Pitt-Greensburg three tied the game at 32 with 8:04 in the quarter, Mount Aloysius scored 10 of the next 12 points in the game to build an 8 point lead. Kendrick scored 5 of the 10 in the 4 minute span, with
Hannah Kitko (Houtzdale, PA/Moshannon Valley) adding a three and Robinson hitting two free throws. In the 4th another Sammarco three put the Mounties up 10 early in the quarter, and the Mounties continued to build on the lead as Kendrick completed an old fashioned three point play to move the Mountie lead to 13 points.
Kendrick finished the game with 27 points, a career high. She shot 7-14 from the field including 4-6 from beyond the arc and hit all 9 free throws she attempted. She also grabbed 7 rebounds which along with Sammarco and Kitko was a team high. Sammarco also had an efficient game, shooting 50% from the field good for 19 points. Robinson also finished in double figures scoring 11. As a team the Mounties finished the game shooting 41.3% and an incredible 52% from three.
The win moves the Mounties to 4-12 on the year, with a 4-5 record in AMCC play. This puts them in a tie for the final playoff spot through half of their conference schedule. The Mounties return to action on Saturday when they take on Penn State Behrend, beginning at 2 pm.
