Mounties Win Regular Season Finale, Set-up Saturday Rematch with Franciscan

Cresson -- The Mount Aloysius Women's Soccer Team hosted Franciscan University in their regular season finale on Tuesday night. They were able to earn a home playoff game by defeating the Barons, 1-0.

Tuesday's game had plenty of playoff implications going in, as Mount Aloysius could have earned the third, fourth, or fifth seed, while Franciscan could have been between third or completely left out of the playoff picture.

Mount Aloysius controlled the game for it's entirety. They had 10 shots on goal compared to the Barons' five, and had all seven corner kicks that were taken in the game. They were also able to enforce their will, as Franciscan racked up 13 fouls and one yellow card.

The Mounties had early scoring chances, with multiple shots by Jenna Gardner (Montoursville, PA, Loyalsock) and a missed opportunity by Kourtney Walls (Salix, PA, Forest Hills). However, in the 34th minute, Summer Schell (Hershey, PA, Hershey) put the Mounties ahead with her fifth goal of the season. The goal came off a free kick that Schell put right below the cross bar.

While Walls would put one more shot on goal, the score at half would be 1-0. Mount Aloysius picked up right where they left off in the first, adding three more shots on goal before allowing a single shot attempt.

Franciscan would take four of their five SOG in the final 26-plus minutes of the game, but all were saved by goalkeeper Lauren Davey (Leonardtown, MD, St. Mary's Ryken). The 1-0 final earned Davey her seventh shutout of the season.

With the win on Tuesday, Mount Aloysius set up a rematch with Franciscan on Saturday, in the first round of the AMCC Tournament. Via tiebreaker criteria, the Mounties earn the third seed, over D'Youville, while Franciscan sits alone in 6th place. The game will be played as part of a Men's and Women's playoff doubleheader. The winner of Saturday's game will meet Penn State Behrend next week.
