Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius Men's Basketball team picked up its 12th win of the season with a 73-66 win over Pitt-Greensburg. The win was the Mounties 9th in AMCC play and moved their record in the ACWC to 8-1 on the year.
Carlos Palacio (Bilbao, Spain/Phelps School) got things started for the Mounties with a three from the wing on their first possession. The Bobcats quickly scored the next 8 points, but after a Mountie timeout
Trent McErlane (Greenville, PA/Greenville) hit a three pointer off a screen and
Carlos Palacio made a lay up to tie the game. After trading baskets, Greensburg completed another unanswered run that saw them build a 9 point lead. This run was then duplicated by the Mounties as
Azim Hutson (Orlando, FL/Ocoee) picked up a steal and was fouled on a dunk attempt that started the Mount Aloysius run. After a
Julian Stover (Washington, DC/Richard Montgomery) layup, a corner three from Hutson and a
Tommy Pisula (Scottdale, PA/Southmoreland) layup, Palacio tied the game at 21 with his second three of the game. Mount Aloysius finished the half strong as
Imrane Amadou (Cotonou, Benin/Harcum Junior College) scored 5 points in the last minute of play to give the Mounties a 7 point halftime advantage.
The halftime lead quickly evaporated as the Bobcats scored the first 7 points in the half to tie the game at 35. From that point the Mounties responded with a 16-2 run that put the Mounties up 14 with 13:42 to go. Stover scored 9 points in the span including 2 deep step back threes that put the home student section into a frenzy. The Mounties maintained their lead throughout the next 10 minutes. The crowd continually cheered on the Mounties and erupted again with just over 4 minutes remaining. Hutson blocked a three point attempt, gathered the rebound and raced down court to throw down a hard slam dunk on the break. Amadou kept Mount Aloysius ahead in the final four minutes, scoring 6 straight points inside. Pitt-Greensburg did attempt a late comeback however Stover hit two late free throws to put the game away.
The Mounties shot 51.9% from the field in the game, including 39.1% from three. Stover and Palacio each scored 20 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in the game. Palacio did most of his damage early, scoring 13 of his 20 in the first half, while Stover closed with 14 in the second half. Amadou also finished in double figures, scoring 15 points on 6-7 shooting and hitting all three free throws he attempted.
With the win, the Mounties record is now 12-10 with a 9-6 record in AMCC play. The win clinched the Mounties second straight AMCC playoff berth with three games to play. Mount Aloysius is currently in 4th place in the conference, just half a game behind 3rd place Medaille. The Mounties will return to action on Saturday when they host Pitt-Bradford and will celebrate Senior Day before the game.
