Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius Women's Basketball team celebrated Senior Day with a 54-50 victory over Pitt-Bradford. Before the game, the Mounties took some time to celebrate two players who are set to graduate this Spring.
Breana Kendrick (Broad Top City, PA/Tussey Mountain) has been a solid four year contributor for the Mounties. She has scored 1,132 career points as she became the 6th player in program history to break the 1,000 point barrier earlier this season. After averaging 10.3 points per game over her first three years, Breana has taken charge this season, averaging 16.5 points per game while also grabbing 6.5 rebounds per contest. The Mounties also recognized
Caroline Showalter (Bellwood, PA/Bellwood Antis), a newcomer to the program who will be graduating a year early. Showalter joined the team this season and has started all 23 games for the Mounties. She has been a solid post defender, grabbing 5 rebounds per game
After a slow start that saw the teams tied at 4 after 4 minutes, the Mounties began to dominate play. In the last 6 minutes the Mounties scored 18 points while allowing their opponents to score 6 to open up a 12 point lead. Kendrick scored 9 points in the run including two lay-ups, a deep three and two from the line. Showalter also chipped in hitting a three from the top of the key and adding a free throw. The second quarter saw the Mounties start sluggishly again as Pitt-Bradford slowly whittled the lead down to 5. With under 2 minutes left in the half,
Lea Sammarco (Patton, PA/Bishop Carroll) hit three point field goals on back to back possessions to regain the double digit lead. Kendrick hit two more late free throws to give the Mounties a 13 point edge at the half.Â
The Panthers came out with a strong full court press that saw the Mounties struggle after the break. Pitt Bradford quickly cut into the lead scoring the first 9 points of the half. Mount Aloysius was able to slow the comeback attempt with two Kendrick free throws and a
Macy King (New Bethlehem, PA/Redbank Valley) lay up, however the lead was completely lost with 2:12 to go in the quarter. The Mounties were able to push back ahead moving to the fourth as they scored the last 5 points of the period. Kendrick controlled most of play in the final period, scoring 8 points in the quarter to seal the victory. This included 2 deep three pointers that were able to push the lead back to 2 possessions.Â
Kendrick finished the game with 26 points and 7 rebounds. She hit 3 of her 4 attempted three pointers and made 11 of 14 free throws. Sammarco also finished in double figures with 13 points. Showalter was able to pull in double digit rebounds in the contest, while scoring 4 points.Â
The Mounties are now 8-15 on the season and 8-8 in AMCC play. They are currently in 4th place in the conference, however 3 other teams are within a game of the Mounties. They will return to action on Wednesday when they host La Roche College for the Play4Kay game.Â
