Myrtle Beach, SC - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team used big performances from three seniors to get back in the win column after a tough loss on Monday.
Senior right hander
Ryan McElwee (Centre Hall, PA/Penn's Valley) took the hill for the Mounties in his first action of the year. McElwee dominated the Tornados, keeping them scoreless through the first 6 innings while his teammates worked to build a big lead. McElwee went 7 innings for the Mounties, allowing only 1 run on 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. He kept Centenary hitless through the first 5 and 2/3 innings.Â
The Mounties offense was kick started in the second when senior
Sam Keibler (Kittaning, Pa/Kittaning) led off the frame with a shot that cut through the wind and got over the right center field wall for his first home run of the season. The home run was followed up by a bunt single from another senior
Nicholas Belka (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) and a triple to the left center gap from
Matthew Brown (Hustontown, Pa/Forbes Road). Mount Aloysius was able to tack on another run in the 3rd when Belka singled up the middle, stole second base and scored on a 2 out single from catcher
Douglas Smith (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa).
Mount Aloysius put up another big number in the 5th inning, when they scored 5 runs on 2 hits, 2 errors and a walk.
Matthew McCourt (Mullica Hill, NJ/ St. Augustine Prep) and Smith both hit RBI doubles in the inning while Belka knocked in a run when he reached on an error. With an 11-1 lead in the 7th, the Mounties began to sub in some bench players to gain some valuable game time experience. Freshmen
James Rice (Leechburg, PA/Greensburg Central Catholic) and
Trap Wentling (Greenville, Pa/Greenville) each hit RBI doubles, with Rice driving in 1 run and Wentling collecting 2 RBIs. Freshmen pitchers
Max Pici (Trafford, PA/Penn Trafford) and
Jake Kost (La Plata, MD/St. Mary's Ryken) each tossed scoreless frames to close the game.
Keibler finished the game 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, 2 batted in and the home run. Belka went 2 for 4 with three runs scored, two driven in and two stolen bases.Â
The Mounties record is now 6-2 this season. They will play 2 more games in Myrtle Beach as they take on Albertus Magnus in a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 3:00.
