Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team picked up two more wins on Saturday as they swept their doubleheader against D'Youville. Due to weather forecasts in Buffalo, the games were moved to Cresson, which resulted in an odd situation that saw the Mounties as the visiting team on their home field. The Mounties took the first game 12-0 and the second 17-1.
Junior
Michael McCourt (Mullica Hill, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) took the hill for the Mounties in the first game and continued the outstanding start to his campaign. McCourt threw 4 innings in the game and allowed 2 hits while walking none and striking out 3. He allowed a double in the first, and a single in the third, but kept the Spartans silent as the Mounties built an early lead.
The first run of the game came in the 2nd after a
Sam Keibler (Kittaning, PA/Kittaning) lead off double. He scored 2 batters later on an RBI groundout by
Douglas Smith (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa). After a shutdown inning from McCourt, the Mounties struck with a 5 run frame in the third. Mike's brother, shortstop
Matthew McCourt (Mullica Hill, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) drove in 1 with a double to left, and scored along with
Daniel Singer (Saint Mary, PA/Elk County Catholic) on an error in the following at bat.
Nicholas Belka (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) followed this with an RBI triple and then scored on the same play after a throwing error from the D'Youville shortstop.
The Mounties followed the big inning in the 3rd, by tacking on two more in the 4th. The Mounties took advantage of two walks and a balk to set up the scoring situation. Singer drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly to center, and Keibler followed with a 2 out ground rule double to score the second run.
Matthew McCourt hit a home run in the 6th to add another run to the Mountie lead, and the Mounties finished their scoring with 3 in the 7th.
Jeremy Iellimo (Arnold, PA/Valley) brought in the first run with a single to third base and Singer brought in the final two with a single to center.
With a large lead, the Mounties were able to get some valuable game time for underclass pitchers.
Max Pici (Trafford, PA/Penn-Trafford) pitched 2 innings and allowed 1 hit while striking out 4.
Dakota Sunday (Blairsville, PA/Homer Center) struck out the side in the 7th to close the game.
Michael McCourt earned the win, his 4th, to move his record to 4-0 this season.
Mount Aloysius continued their offensive dominance in the second game. After opening the scoring with a successful double steal play to score Belka in the second, the Mounties scored 4 in the 3rd to build a larger lead. Singer knocked in the first run with a single to left. The big blow came two batters later as Keibler hit a 3 run blast to deep center to build a 5 run lead.The Mounties added two more runs following an
Alan Mackey (Altoona, PA/Altoona) ead off double. Mackey scored on a throwing error following a sacrifice bunt, and the second Mountie run came after Iellimo beat out a potential double play ball to bring in
Trevor Miller (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Hills).
The Mounties added 4 more in the 5th inning. Miller brought in the first run on a fielders choice and Singer drew a bases loaded walk to put the Mounties up 9-0. McCourt closed the scoring in the inning with a single to center to drive in 2 runs. After D'Youville scored a run in the 6th without a hit, the Mounties struck again with 4 more in the 7th. Trap Wentling (Greenville, PA/Greenville) each brought in a run with an RBI single and Miller drove in two more with a double to center. The Mounties scoring finished in the 9th. After
Camden Gipe (Windsor, PA/ Red Lion Area) led off with a single, and Wentling doubled to left to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with none out. Mackey hit a sacrifice fly to center and Wentling scored the final run on a passed ball.
Dylan Coyle (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) started for the Mounties and held the Spartans scoreless over 5 innings of work. He allowed 2 hits and a walk while striking out 4 batters to pick up his 2nd win of the season.
Tanner Perrone (Lilly, PA/Penn Cambria) pitched two innings in relief and allowed the sole, unearned run.
Austin Steedle (Gibsonia, PA/Hampton) threw two scoreless innings to finish the game, allowing no hits and 3 walks.
The wins move the Mounties record to 17-4. They will return to action on Tuesday when they host Juniata in a non-conference doubleheader.
