Mountie Baseball Dominates Hilbert in Doubleheader Sweep

Niagara University, NY - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team came back from being swept midweek to dominate the weekend doubleheader with Hilbert, winning game 1 by a score of 13-3 and game 2 15-1.

The Mounties got off to a quick start as they scored 2 in the opening frame. Matthew McCourt (Mullica Hill, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) doubled to left center to score the first and then scored on a two out double to left from Douglas Smith (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) The Mounties continued to tack onto their lead, scoring in each of the first 5 innings. They scored 1 in the 2nd when Aaron Shinn (Woodbridge, VA/CD Hylton) singled to left to bring in Matthew Brown (Hustontown, PA/Forbes Road) who led off the inning with a walk.

McCourt led off the 3rd inning with a long home run to left field. After a walk and an error, Smith brought in another with a single to center and Daniel Singer (Saint Mary's, PA/Elk County Catholic) brought in a third on a squeeze bunt. Sam Keibler (Kittaning, PA/Kittaning) drove in another run in the 4th with a single through the right side and scored with two outs on a wild pitch. He struck again in the 5th with a 2 out RBI single to center bringing in Patrick Mahon (Pittsburgh, PA/ Allegheny CC) who led off with a double to right. The Mounties capped off their scoring in the 7th with 4 more runs. McCourt brought in three with another long blast to left field and Smith singled in the final run with two outs in the inning.

As the Mounties were piling on runs, junior Michael McCourt (Mullica Hill, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) was keeping the hawks at bay. The younger McCourt went 6 innings for the Mounties and allowed 2 runs, 1 earned. He scattered 8 hits while walking 1 and striking out 11 batters. The win moved McCourt to 6-0 on the season. He was replaced by senior Luke Stultz (New Paris, PA/Chestnut Ridge) who allowed 1 run on 1 hit in the 7th.

Matt McCourt was the offensive star of the game as he finished 3-3 with the two home runs and 5 RBIs. Keibler also finished 3-3, while scoring 3 runs and bringing in two more. Smith went 3-5 with 3 RBIs.

Game 2 was marked by a dominant pitching performance from Dylan Coyle (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan) who kept Hilbert scoreless for the majority of the game as the Mountie offense sputtered early, before exploding for 11 runs in the 8th. Coyle went 8 and 2/3s for the Mounties allowing only 1 unearned run in the 9th on 6 hits and a walk. He struck out 9 batters en route to his 4th win of the year.

The Mountie offense did not start the night cap as quickly as the first game. After two quick 1-2-3 innings, the Mounties took the lead in the 3rd when 2 runs were able to score on a wind affected 2 out single from Aaron Shinn. The third Mountie run came in the 7th. Alan Mackey (Altoona, Pa/Altoona) led off the inning with a double to left and scored on an error a batter later.

The big inning for the Mounties came in the top of the 8th as they scored 11 runs in the frame. The inning started with a Keibler single to right and a Smith double to left. Nicholas Belka (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) followed this up with a 2 RBI single to center. Mackey brought in the 3rd run of the frame on a single through the left side and was moved to scoring position by a Mahon single up the middle and both runners moved up a base on a passed ball. Jeremy Iellimo (Arnold, PA/Valley) brought Mackey in with a single to right and quickly stole second base. After a groundout and intentional walk to Matt McCourt, Keibler picked up his second hit of the inning ith a single through the left side to score 2. Smith beat out an infield single to bring in McCourt and Belka doubled to left to bring in Keibler. The inning was then punctuated by Singer, who drilled a 3 run home run to left to close the scoring.

The Mounties used the large lead to bring in some pinch hitters in the 9th and saw Trap Wentling (Greenville, PA/Greenville) drive in the final run on a double to left. The Hawks were able to scratch a run across in the bottom of the 9th. They used a 1 out double down the left field line, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly to score the run. After Coyle walked his first batter of the game in the 9th, he was replaced by Scott Schultz (Pittsburgh, PA/Mount Lebanon) who struck out the lone batter he faced to end the game.

Iellimo and Belka both recorded 3-hit games in the nightcap as Iellimo went 3-6 and Belka finished 3-5. Singer, Mackey, Keibler and Smith all finished with 2 hits a piece

The wins moved the Mounties to 23-7 on the season with a 10-2 record in conference play. They will have a conference bye this week as they are scheduled to play two non-conference games. On Tuesday they will travel to Messiah College for a single 9 inning game, and follow that up with another 9 inning game against Penn College at BB&T park, the home of the minor league Williamsport Crosscutters.
