Cresson, PA - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team rebounded from their loss on Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Medaille on Saturday. The Mounties won game 1 7-0 and hit their way to a 16-2 win in game 2.
Their game 1 victory was behind a dominant pitching performance from
Michael McCourt (Mullica Hill, NJ/St. Augustine Prep). He threw a three hit complete game shutout that saw him strike out 8 batters. After picking up their first hit in the tip of the first, they were able to put two runners in scoring position in the second after a leadoff single and a double to right center. From that point on, McCourt took over. He got out of the jam in the second getting the next three batters out with two strikeouts and a shallow fly ball to left. McCourt then retired the next 15 batters in a row to finish the game,
The first run of the game came in the bottom of the third.
Jeremy Iellimo (Arnold, PA/Valley) singled up the middle to lead off the inning and
Daniel Singer (Saint Mary's, PA/Elk County Catholic) followed with a double down the left field line.
Matthew McCourt (Mullica Hill, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) then laid down a perfect push bunt to bring in Iellimo, sliding into first ahead of a tag attempt for a bunt single. McCourt then took off for an uncovered second, as the Medaille defense focused on his steal attempt, Singer was able to race home to put the lead at 2-0. Two innings later Iellimo would lead off with a single again, and score two batters later on a McCourt ground out.
In the 6th, the Mounties used a 2 out rally to score 4 runs and put the game away.
Joe Hudak (Central City, PA/Shanksville-Stonycreek) struck out on a pitch in the dirt, but reached on the wild pitch. The Mounties then used three straight singles and a double to score the runs.
Patrick Mahon (Pittsburgh, PA/Allegheny CC) singled to right, Iellimo brought in a run with a single to left center, Singer brought in two with a single to center and McCourt finished the scoring with a bloop double to right.
Michael McCourt picked up the win to move his record to 5-0 on the season. Iellimo finished the game 3-4 with 3 runs scored, while Singer,
Matthew McCourt and
Sam Keibler (Kittaning, PA/Kittaning) all recorded 2 hits in the contest.
Mount Aloysius fell behind early in game 2, but exploded for 16 unanswered runs to win the game. Medaille used 2 hits and an error to score 2 runs in the top of the 2nd off of starting pitcher
Dylan Coyle (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan). The Mounties were able to strike right back in the bottom half.
Douglas Smith (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) led off with a single, and after a passed ball, scored on a
Nicholas Belka (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) single to center. Coyle was able to keep the Mavericks off the board in the 3rd, and the Mounties continued to build momentum. They loaded the bases with two singles and an error, with clean-up hitter
Sam Keibler coming up. Keibler drove a deep fly ball to right field for a grand slam, landing near the Mountie stables beyond the wall.
The Mounties continued to tack on runs, as they scored in their remaining 6 at bats. In the 4th, Mahon brought in a run with a safety squeeze that he beat out for a single. He drove in 2 more with a double to the right center gap in the 5th. Iellimo also picked up an RBI in the inning, with a single to right field. In the 6th, Keibler led off the inning with a line drive that found its way over the fence for his second home run of the day to score the Mounties 10th run. An inning later, he came up big again. After Matt McCourt brought in a run with an RBI single to center, Keibler hit another ball deep to right field to bring in 3 runs on his third long ball of the game. The final two Mountie runs came in the 8th inning. Pinch hitter
Tyler Suder (Boswell, PA/North Star) hit an RBI double to right center, and another pinch hitter,
DJ Olenchick (Northern Cambria, PA/Northern Cambria) brought in the final run with an RBI ground out.
Coyle went 7 innings to pick up his third win of the season, He allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, on 6 hits and a walk.
Scott Schultz (Pittsburgh, PA/Mount Lebanon) and
Cole Funk (Fort Loudon, PA/Fannett Metal) each threw scoreless innings of relief to close out the game. Keibler finished the game 3-5 with the three home runs and eight RBIs. Iellimo went 4-5 in the game, while Smith and Belka both finished 3-4.
The wins moves the Mounties' record to 21-5 on the season with an 8-0 record in AMCC play. They will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Pitt-Greensburg for another AMCC doubleheader.
