Pittsburgh, PA - The Mount Aloysius Baseball team were unable to get the bats going in the first game of the double elimination portion of the AMCC Tournament as they fell to La Roche University by a score of 5-1 on Thursday.
The Mounties were able to score early as they pushed a run across in the first inning. After consecutive errors saw the Mounties put runners on the corners with no outs,
Sam Keibler (Kittaning, PA/Kittaning) grounded into a fielders choice to bring in the run and put the Mounties ahead. La Roche was able to come back in the second as they were able to get a two run home run from Brandon Nania to go ahead 2-1.
The Mounties looked to score again in the top of the 4th as Keibler led off with a single up the middle and
Jeremy Iellimo (Arnold, PA/Valley Area) doubled down the left field line. Keibler was then thrown out at home on a fielders choice and the next two Mounties flied out to center and struck out to end the threat. After the Mounties were unable to take advantage of their chance to score, the Redhawks did not waste their opportunity. La Roche loaded the bases with a lead off double, single and hit by pitch, but saw
Ryan McElwee (Centre Hall, PA/Penns Valley) strike out two batters to almost get out of the jam. With two down, Troy Kifer singled to center to score two and push the lead to 4-1. Despite walking the next batter, McElwee was able to get out of the inning with a ground ball to second.
The Mounties were unable to answer after the 4th as they were only able to muster 2 hits in the final 5 innings off of La Roche starter Travis Holman. La Roche was able to tack one final run on in the 8th as Tristen Tinney lined a triple to right and then scored in the next at bat on an RBI ground out.
McElwee threw all 8 innings for the Mounties, allowing 5 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. The loss moved his record to 3-2 on the season. Keibler was the only Mountie to record multiple hits in the game as he finished 2 for 4.
The Mounties (27-15) will take on Penn State Altoona in the first elimination game of the day on Friday. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM.
