LATROBE -- The Mount Aloysius Men's Soccer team started the 2019 in fine fashion, with a 6-1 win at Saint Vincent College. After a bit of a slow start, the Mounties finished the game with six unanswered goals.
Saint Vincent began the scoring in the 16th minute with a goal from Roberto Fulweiler. It came as the result of a penalty kick. This would be one of only three SVC shots on goal for the game.
Pau Aran (Barcelona, Spain, Colegio Inglés Playa del Carmen) began the scoring for Mount Aloysius in the 29th minute with a goal, his first of the year. Aran's first goal started a major momentum shift that saw the Mounties find the back of the net three more times, over a span of 11 minutes. First, Aran found FreshmanÂ
Luke Bicanic (Brisbane, Australia, John Paul College) for his first goal of the season, only three minutes after the previous goal. Less than a minute later, Aran found the back of the net again for his second goal of the game. He scored or assisted on four of the Mounties six goals. The first half scoring was finished by
Joshua Devlin (Southend-on-Sea, England, Seevic College), when he scored his first of two goals, with just over five minutes to play in the first half.
The Mounties continued to fire on all cylinders in the second half. Within the first three minutes,Â
Erik Johansson (Malmö, Sweden, ProCivitas Privata Gymnasium) added another goal to the total to make it 5-1. The final scoring tally of the afternoon came on Devlin's second goal of the day, in the 55th minute, with the assist going to Aran.
In addition to the six goals, Mount Aloysius had nine other shots on goal, for a total of 15.
The bench got very involved in the game, as 16 Mountie subs made an appearance. GoalkeeperÂ
Tucker Hays (Watsontown, PA, Warrior Run) got the win in goal, while saving one of the two shots he saw.
Interim Head Coach
Adam Sprague picked up his first career win at Mount Aloysius. It was also the fourth consecutive year that Mount Aloysius has defeated St. Vincent. The last two years, their meetings have been 1-0 decisions.
The Mounties will return to action on Monday evening, when they host Eastern University. Eastern is currently ranked #15 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll. They also won their season opener, 2-0, against Marietta.
