CRESSON -- The Mount Aloysius Women's Soccer team took a tie game into overtime against Stevenson University, but gave up a goal just under three minutes into the extra period. The goal ended the Mounties' night abruptly.
In a back and forth game that had many scoring opportunities, overtime was needed to determine the winner. SeniorÂ
Summer Schell (Hershey, PA, Hershey) got the Mounties on the board first with a free kick goal, that ended up just above the keeper's hand and just under the cross bar, from well outside the box. The goal by Schell was her first of the season and her 12th career. This was one of the few legitimate scoring opportunities that Mount Aloysius had for the game.
Stevenson had plenty of opportunities to score, as they out-shot Mount Aloysius 22-5. SophomoreÂ
Lauren Davey (Leonardtown, MD, St. Mary's Ryken) played well in goal, for most of the game, making many difficult saves. Emily Rusk, from Stevenson, scored their first goal of the season, with just under four minutes to go in the first half. The Mustangs narrowily missed a goal a few minutes earlier when a shot clanged off the post. The half ended in a 1-1 tie.
The second half saw a much more evenly played game, as neither team could get a shot past the keeper. Davey made five of her ten saves in the second half. Following the scoreless second half, Stevenson came out quickly and scored two minutes and 13 seconds into overtime. The goal ended the sudden death period to give the Mustangs a 2-1 victory.
This was the second all-time meeting for Mount Aloysius and Stevenson. Last season, Stevenson defeated the Mounties 3-0, in Owings Mills, MD.
The women return to action following the Labor Day holiday, on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Latrobe to take on Saint Vincent College. SVC also lost their opener today, a 3-0 defeat, to Pitt-Greensburg.
