LATROBE -- The Mount Aloysius Women's Soccer team picked up their first victory of the season on Wednesday afternoon. They scored five unanswered goals en route to a 5-1 victory against Saint Vincent.
In a game that was dominated in the box score by the Mounties, the offense exploded for five goals, including two from SophomoreÂ
Kourtney Walls (Salix, PA, Forest Hills). The Mounties total 25 shots for the game, with 15 of them being on goal.
Saint Vincent got the scoring started early when Lauren May scored past Freshman
Courtney Vought (Somerset, PA, Somerset). It was Vought's first career start/appearance in goal for the Mounties. After a couple near misses from Mount Aloysius, Walls opened up the scoring in the 31st minute with header past Abigail Johnson, for her first goal of the game. The Mounties would be kept off the scoreboard the rest of the half, heading to the break in a 1-1 tie.
During the second half, the floodgates opened for Mount Aloysius. FreshmanÂ
Katie Figinski (Abingdon, MD, Edgewood) had two shots on goal that were saved by the Bearcat goalie before fellow Freshman,Â
Johnna Adams (Lancaster, PA, Hempfield), scored her first career goal on a chip from ten yards out. The goal came in the 52nd minute, just over six minutes into the second half.
In the following ten minutes, Mount Aloysius would put four more shots on goal, with Figinski finding the back of the net on her attempt. The goal for Figinski was also the first of her career.
Walls scored her second goal of the game, in the 75th minute, to put the Mounties up 4-1. She scooted in past the goalie from just outside the goal.
Mount Aloysius would finish up their scoring for the match when JuniorÂ
Brianna Byler (Landisville, PA, Hempfield) was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Byler took the resulting PK and put it past the keeper on the ground, for her first goal of the season. The Mounties would put two more shots on goal in the last five minutes, but couldn't convert either one.
The win constitutes the team's first win of the 2019 season, and Vought's first career win in goal.
The Mounties will return to action this weekend at home, where they will take on Geneva College on Saturday at 2 PM and Lycoming College on Sunday at 1 PM.
