ERIE -- The Mount Aloysius Women's Soccer team opened up the AMCC portion of this year's schedule at Penn State Behrend on Saturday afternoon. The game ended in a scoreless tie.
In this defensive standoff, there were limited scoring opportunities on both sides. GoalkeeperÂ
Lauren Davey (Leonardtown, MD, St. Mary's Ryken) picked up her second shutout of the season, that included eight saves on the day.
The Mounties were outshot by Penn State Behrend 21-8 and the shots on goal, also favored the Lions, 8-3. They were even in corner kicks (5), while Behrend was the more physical team picking up 14 fouls, compared the Mounties' seven.
During the first 45 minutes, there were only two shots on goal, one for each team. The Mounties also had one scoring chance that went null. Just under four minutes in, Mount Aloysius put a shot on goal that went through the hands of the Lion goalkeeper. The credit would've gone to
Maddie Doyle (Abington, PA, Abington), but the Mounties were called offsides, so the goal was reversed, the score staying 0-0.
SophomoreÂ
Jenna Gardner (Montoursville, PA, Loyalsock) had the lone official scoring opportunity in the first half, when she made a great move to get past a Lion defender, and put the shot on goal. The shot was saved by Madi Jones, who registered three saves for the game.
To open the second half, the Mounties put a ton of pressure on PSB. They had two shot attempts in the first three minutes, including a shot on goal by
Johnna Adams (Lancaster, PA, Hempfield). The final 42 minutes of regulation only saw Mount Aloysius attempt three more shots, none on target. Davey came up big in goal, saving five second half shots taken by the Lions.
In the overtime periods, Davey made two more saves, and Adams put a header on goal in the last minute. The shot by Adams was saved and the game finished scoreless.
In the series history, the Mounties have never beaten Penn State Behrend. Both meetings last year resulted in 1-0 losses, including the loss in the AMCC Championship Game. Penn State Behrend was picked to finish first in the AMCC Coaches Poll this season, while Mount Aloysius was picked to finish right behind, in second.
The Mounties will return to the pitch at home, on Tuesday, when they host Chatham University in a non-conference matchup. They will return to AMCC competition next Saturday, also at home, when the meet Pitt-Bradford.
