Mounties Survive past Golden Tornadoes in OT

CRESSON -- The Mount Aloysius Women's Soccer team survived an early goal by Geneva to come away with an overtime victory on Saturday afternoon.

Within a span of five minutes and 22 seconds, Sophomore Kourtney Walls (Salix, PA, Forest Hills) and Senior Sam Torrenti (Chester, CT, Valley Regional) found the back of the net, to go from a 1-0 deficit to a 2-1 win. The Mounties outshot Geneva, 29-3 on the day.

Very early into the game, the Mounties were firing shot after shot at the Geneva goal. They were able to put four shots on goal before the Tornadoes even had an attempt. However, Geneva was able to find the scoreboard first with 27 seconds to go in the first half. On a play just outside the goalie box, Freshman Courtney Vought (Somerset, PA, Somerset) came out to play the ball. Following the play, Erica Sumner found herself with a shot attempt that went right over Vought's head as she was retreating. The goal made it 1-0 Geneva.

Into the second half, the Mounties continued to pepper the goal without finding a way past the keeper. Midway through the half, Geneva would end up having to replace their goalie who picked up a red card, which was her technically her second yellow of the day. As the half continued, the second Tornado keeper picked up right where her predecessor had left off.

With just over two minutes to play in regulation, there was a foul just outside the box on the side opposite the benches. Torrenti would take the ensuing free kick and find the top corner of the goal to tie the game, with 2:27 to play.

Tied at one, the teams would move on to an extra period. In the 93rd minute, Walls was dribbling into the middle of the field, just outside the box and rocketed a shot into the top left corner of the goal. The goal is Walls third of the season.

The overtime win marked the second time Mount Aloysius has played extra time this season. It was their first overtime victory of the season.

The Mounties will have a quick turnaround, as they will play visiting Lycoming tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
