UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH -- The Mount Aloysius Men's Soccer team started their four game road stretch with a tough 2-1 overtime loss at the hands of John Carroll. John Carroll is currently listed in the "Others Receiving Votes" category of the United Soccer Coaches' Poll.
For the second consecutive game, the Mounties were severely out shot in the box score, but held strong to give themselves a chance. There were only four registered shots for Mount Aloysius, and only one was on goal. In comparison, John Carroll registered 32 total shots, 14 of which were on goal.
The first half was fully controlled by the Blue Streaks. They were responsible for all 13 shots that were taken in the half. However, SophomoreÂ
Tucker Hays (Watsontown, PA, Warrior Run) held strong in goal, saving all four shots that he saw in the half.
There was plenty of action on both sides in the second half. John Carroll came out and put five shots on goal, all saved by Hays, in the first 20 minutes of the second half. In the 67th minute, the Blue Streaks finally got a shot past Hays to take a 1-0 lead. John Carroll continued to apply pressure, putting another shot on goal a few minutes later. To this point in the half, the Mounties had attempted three total shots, none of which needing saving.
In the 80th minute, the Mounties found the scoreboard when SophomoreÂ
Joshua Christie (Aberdeen, Scotland, Hazlehead Academy) found SeniorÂ
Joshua Devlin (Southend-on-Sea, England, Seevic College) for his third goal of the season. This tied the game at 1-1, with just over ten minutes to go in the half.
In the final ten minutes of regulation, John Carroll attempted four more shots, one on goal, but could not find the back of the net. Tied at 1, the game went to overtime. This marked the first overtime game of the year, for either team.
Overtime did not see much action, until the 94th minute. Early in the minute, John Carroll was able to get off their first Shot on Goal of overtime, which was saved by Hays. Approximately 14 seconds later, Jared Ianiro found the net for the game winner. That put the Blue Streaks up 2-1, and gave them the victory.
Hays registered 12 saves on the day, bringing his season total up to 13.
The win pushed the Blue Streaks record to 3-0 on the year, while the Mounties moved to 1-2. Looking forward, the Mounties will travel to Williamsport on Monday afternoon to take on Lycoming. Mount Aloysius has not played Lycoming since 2015, and they are 0-3 all-time against the Warriors.
