Game Recap: Softball |

After Almost Two-Years, Mounties Get Back on the Field and Into the Win Column

GREENSBURG, Pa. -- On Saturday, the Softball program at Mount Aloysius played their first games since, May 11, 2019. They opened up the 2021 season with a doubleheader at Pitt-Greensburg (0-4). The return to the field went well for the Mounties, as they won both games against the Bobcats, to improve to 2-0.

Game 1
- Both teams picked up a hit, in the first inning, but no runs. However, the Mounties used a five-run, second inning, to gain the lead. Kayla Diehl (Schellsburg, PA, Chestnut Ridge) drove in the first run, with a double, in her first career at-bat. The next two batters walked, pushing across a run and leaving the bases loaded. Lydia DeFazio (Harrison City, PA, Penn Trafford) cleared the bases with a double to right-center, giving her three of her five RBIs, on the day.
- Following the conclusion of the second inning, neither team picked up a hit in either of the third or fourth innings.
- Pitt-Greensburg scored their lone run of the game, in the bottom of the fifth, after an early base-hit came around to score on an error. 5-1 MAC
- With two ducks on the pond in the top of the sixth, and two outs, DeFazio again doubled to clear the bases. The double gave DeFazio RBIs four and five, on the day, making it 7-1, Mounties.
- Neither team got a runner past first base over the final inning and a half, finishing the game, with a final score of 7-1.

Game 2
- Mount Aloysius struck first again, picking up a run in both of the first two innings. Tawnya Holben (Pittsburgh, PA, Fox Chapel) drove in run number one, in the first, on a sacrifice fly. In the second, Diehl added another extra base hit, a triple, to drive in Lexi Wilt (Shanksville, PA, Shanksville-Stonycreek) from first base, for the Mounties second run.
- The Bobcats exploded for three runs in the bottom of the second inning, to take a 3-2 lead. They picked up four hits in the inning, with three singles and a double.
- In the next half inning, the Mounties responded, scoring two runs on three hits and an error, to get back ahead, 4-3. Mattie Harr (Latrobe, PA, Greater Latrobe), Alexa Nagy (Apollo, PA, Kiski Area), and Makayla Weyant (Bedford, PA, Chestnut Ridge), all picked up singles in the inning.
- Grace Gardini (York, PA, York Catholic) caused havoc on the bases, in the fourth inning, scoring another Mountie run. She picked up a single and a stolen base, on her way to scoring, thanks to a throwing error.
- UPG scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game at five. Only three of their six total runs, would end up as earned runs.
- Mount Aloysius grabbed the lead for good, in the top of the seventh, as Holben added her second RBI of the game, followed by Abby Reitz (Greencastle, PA, Greencastle Antrim) driving in a run, on a fielder's choice. Heading to the final half inning, it was 7-5 Mounties.
- The Mounties allowed a run, in the bottom of the seventh, but picked up the third out before any other runners could score, ending the game, 7-6.

Highlights
- All but three Mounties that played on Saturday, played their first games in a Mountie uniform. DeFazio, Holben, and Reitz, were the only three that had played for Mount Aloysius, prior to this season.
- Both Mountie pitchers, Madison Hillard (Greenville, PA, Greenville) and Wilt, threw complete games. Both pitchers earned their first career wins. Hillard only allowed one run, which was unearned.
- DeFazio, the AMCC Preseason Player of the Year, drove in five runs in Game 1, which currently leads all AMCC players. She finished the day, 4-for-8, with two doubles.

Up Next
The Mounties will open up AMCC play, next Saturday, when they host Pitt-Bradford. The Panthers have yet to play this season, but will open up their 2021 schedule on Tuesday.
