Mounties Upended by Redhawks

Box Score CRESSON, Pa. -- In a battle of previously unbeaten AMCC opponents, Mount Aloysius hosted La Roche on Monday afternoon at Calandra-Smith Field. The Mounties fell to the undefeated Redhawks in both ends of the doubleheader. Mount Aloysius still holds on to second place in the AMCC, with the losses.

GAME 1
- Neither team scored in the first or second inning, with the Mounties squandering the best chance, a second and third, one-out opportunity, in the first frame.
- La Roche struck first in the third inning, using an infield single and a throwing error to bring home two runs, grabbing the early lead.
- Mount Aloysius responded with two runs of their own in the bottom-half of the inning. Tyler Suder (Boswell, PA, North Star) walked to lead off the inning and Cody Smith (Loysville, PA, West Perry) reached on an infield single. Both runners advanced to scoring position with no outs on a wild pitch. Ryan Leonard (James Creek, PA, Tussey Mountain) drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Jeremy Iellimo (Arnold, PA, Valley Area) used the Mounties second out, a groundout to shortstop, to push across Smith for the tying run. 2-2 after three innings.
- A Redhawk solo homerun in the top of the fourth inning put them ahead for good, as the Mounties would fail to score over the final four times at the plate. La Roche added their final two runs in the top of the fifth, on three consecutive hits, making it 5-2.

GAME 2
- La Roche started off the second game with a bang, picking up six, first-inning hits, on the way to four runs. The Redhawks continued adding to their lead, as they scored at least one run in each of the first six innings, giving them a 13-0 lead.
- The Mounties scored their first two runs in the seventh inning.  led off the inning with an infield single, in the hole. He was driven in later by Trap Wentling (Greenville, PA, Greenville), who ripped a double down the left field line. With two outs, Suder drove in Wentling on a triple that got over the centerfielder's head.
- In the top of the eighth, the Redhawks added six runs on six hits, pushing their lead to the largest of the game, 19-2.
- Mount Aloysius added the final marker of the contest, in the bottom of the eighth, when Patrick Mahon (Pittsburgh, PA, Mount Lebanon) singled up the middle to drive home Bill McGinnis (Pipersville, PA, Central Bucks South). McGinnis had reached on a walk, earlier in the inning, as a pinch hitter.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Smith picked up two of the Mounties' three hits in Game One.
- Leonard reached base in all three plate appearances in Game Two, picking up two hits and a walk.
- Both Game One starting pitchers went the distance, throwing seven innings each. , the Mountie hurler, took his second loss of the season, dropping to 4-2. He allowed four earned runs on 11 hits in the outing.

UP NEXT
The Mounties will look to bounce back, on Tuesday, when they travel to nearby-rival, Penn State Altoona. The Lions enter the matchup, 7-13 on the season with a 5-7 record in AMCC play. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
