Mounties Unable to Get Back On Track at Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team played their second doubleheader in two days, on Tuesday, when they traveled to Penn State Altoona, to take on the Lions. The attempt to rebound from Monday's setbacks was unsuccessful as they Mounties fell twice, by score of 4-0 and 11-9.

GAME 1
- After Mount Aloysius left two runners on base, in their half of the first, Penn State Altoona jumped ahead in the bottom half. A double and hit by pitch gave the Lions runners on first and third. They used a single and a sacrifice fly to push across two runs, giving them the early lead.
- Neither team made noise in the second inning, with only seven total batters appearing at the plate. In the third, the Mounties threatened, as Jeremy Iellimo (Arnold, PA, Valley Area) and Brayden Lackey (New Cumberland, PA, Cedar Cliff) each singled with two outs. They failed to score however, as the Lions induced a ground ball to end the threat.
- Both sides failed to get much moving on offense, until the bottom of the fifth. The Lions got a leadoff walk and a one-out single, putting runners at first and third. They used a sacrifice fly to give them an insurance run, as they took a 3-0 lead.
- The Mounties came close to tallying a run, with two outs, as Trap Wentling (Greenville, PA, Greenville) doubled with Lackey on first base. However, Wentling was thrown out at third base, just before the run would score, ending the inning with a zero.
- In the Lions' half of the sixth, they used their third sacrifice fly of the game to add another run, extending their lead to 4-0. They held the Mounties scoreless in the top of the seventh to earn the victory.

GAME 2
- To start the second game, Mount Aloysius jumped out fast. They scored four runs in the top of the first inning, in large part courtesy of four Altoona errors. Ryan Leonard (James Creek, PA, Tussey Mountain) singled up the middle for the lone hit of the inning.
- In response, the Lions came back in their half of the first to score six runs on six hits. They also left the bases loaded. The big hit was a game-tying, three-run homerun, with only one out.
- Both sides settled down on the mound over the next few innings. Only the Mounties added a run, in the fourth inning, when Cody Smith (Loysville, PA, West Perry) singled up the middle to drive home Wentling, making the score 6-5.
- Mount Aloysius started off the sixth inning with a walk and a single, putting pressure on Penn State Altoona. Leonard drove home a run with a groundout, tying the game at six, with two outs in the frame. The next four Mounties reached base, allowing two runs to come across, one on a bases loaded walk, the other on a single by Iellimo. Mount Aloysius headed to the bottom of the sixth, with an 8-6 lead.
- The next bit of action came in the bottom of the seventh. Two, one-out walks, gave the Lions two runners on. The next batter homered over the left field fence, for their second three-run homerun of the game, which put the Mounties behind, 9-8.
- Penn State Altoona added two more insurance runs in the eight inning. Mount Aloysius was able to threaten in the ninth, scoring one run on a Graham Spitz (Hagerstown, MD, North Hagerstown) double, which put the tying run into scoring position, as well. They were unable to add anymore, as a groundout ended the second contest, 11-9, in favor of the Lions.

HIGHLIGHTS
- Game One starter, Douglas Cannon (Valencia, PA, Mars Area), put the Mounties in decent shape on the mound, as he only allowed four runs on six hits. The loss was his second of the season.
- Seth Smith (Mapelton Depot, PA, Mount Union) produced a strong outing, out of the bullpen, in the second game, as he threw 5.1 innings, without allowing a run. He earned a no-decision despite the strong performance.
- Lackey produced the only multi-hit game on the day for Mount Aloysius, as he went 2-for-3 in the first game. He also added a hit and an RBI in Game Two.

UP NEXT
Mount Aloysius will return home, on Saturday, to take on Penn State Behrend, in the regular-season AMCC finale. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. They will follow it up, on Sunday with a rematch against Shenandoah, whom they split with in their season-opener. Saturday's matchup will have playoff implications, as seeding adjustments, across the league, could be determined based on the outcome.
