Mounties Finish Spring Break Trip with Split

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH -- On Friday, the Mount Aloysius Softball played their final two games as part of their spring trip to South Carolina. The split the two games, falling to UMass-Boston and topping SUNY Morrisville.

Leaders
- Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa., South Fayette) had four hits in the two games, driving in two runs in the second game.
- Lexi Wilt (Shanksville, PA, Shanksville-Stonycreek) went 2-3 in the loss to UMass-Boston. She then threw 5.0 innings in the win over Morrisville, allowing only two hits.
- Ella Pearson (Tyrone, Pa., Tyrone) added two hits in two at-bats with a run and an RBI in the win against Morrisville.

How It Happened
Game One vs. UMass-Boston
- UMB scored first in the morning game, jumping ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning. The first of the two runs was unearned after reaching on an error and scoring on a wild pitch.
- Mount Aloysius answered in the fourth inning, when Tawnya Holben (Pittsburgh, PA, Fox Chapel) to lead off the inning and was followed by Mattie Harr (Latrobe, PA, Greater Latrobe) who reached on a walk. Both runners then moved up on a wild pitch, giving the Mounties two runners in scoring position with nobody out. Emma O'Leary (Rothesay, Canada, Rothesay) drove in the first run with a groundout and Wilt drove in the second with a single, tying the game at 2.
- In the fifth inning, the Mounties jumped ahead, 3-2, when Pearson led off the inning with a single. She moved forward on a ground out, then an error, and finally scored on a wild pitch.
- The Beacons used three consecutive hits to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, to jump ahead 4-3. They would also push an insurance run across on a sacrifice fly, giving them a 5-3 lead and the Mounties only having one at-bat remaining. UMass-Boston held the Mounties scoreless in the top of the seventh, preserving the victory.

Game Two vs. SUNY Morrisville
- Mount Aloysius started out slowly in Game Two, but still had all the advantage. Cole scored the first run in the first inning, after she reached on an error, giving them a 1-0 lead.
- In the third inning, Pearson tripled to drive in Makayla Weyant (Bedford, PA, Chestnut Ridge), making the game 2-0. Holben then drove her in on a sacrifice fly. 3-0 Mounties.
- The Mounties added three more runs in the fourth inning, giving them a 6-0 lead. Alaney Vereshack (Smokerun, Pa., Glendale) drove in the first run on a sac fly. Cole then drove in Weyant with a single and came around to score on a wild pitch.
- Mount Aloysius added two more runs in the fifth inning, both unearned, giving the Mounties an 8-0 advantage and winning by the mercy rule.

Into the Box Scores
- Mount Aloysius out-hit their opponents in both games on the day. They had a 6-5 advantage against UMass-Boston and a 10-2 advantage over Morrisville.
- The Mounties also cleaned up their mistakes between the two games, having committed two errors in Game One and not committing any in Game Two.

Up Next
- Mount Aloysius is scheduled to open up their northern schedule, on Wednesday, with their home opener against Grove City. First pitch for Game One is set for 3:00 p.m.
- Mount Aloysius holds a 4-3 series lead against the Wolverines, having split their last meeting in 2019.
