Game Two Walk-off Helps Mounties Split with Pitt-Greensburg

CRESSON, Pa. -- On Thursday, the Mount Aloysius Softball team hosted Pitt-Greensburg in a makeup doubleheader that was previously postponed. The Mounties faltered in Game One before winning Game Two to earn the split against the Bobcats.

Leaders
- Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa., South Fayette) led the Mounties with thre hits over the two contests, adding two scored runs in the second game. She was 3-for-7 on the day.
- The biggest hit of the day was from Makayla Weyant (Bedford, PA, Chestnut Ridge) who doubled in the bottom of the 9th inning to score the tying run, with nobody out, allowing the Mounties to score twice in the frame.
- Madison Hillard (Greenville, PA, Greenville) had a solid day in the circle, going 5.0 innings in relief in Game Two, allowing five hits and two unearned runs, while earning the victory.

How It Happened
Game One
- Pitt-Greensburg started things off quick, with the second and third batters of the game singling. The next batter reaced on a throwing error, which allowed a run to score and give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
- Mount Aloysius tied the game, in the bottom of the fourth inning. With first and third, one out, Tawnya Holben (Pittsburgh, PA, Fox Chapel) reached on a fielder's choice and allowed Cole to score from third, making it 1-1.
- In the top of the seventh, disaster struck for the Mounties. With one out and a runner on, the Bobcat batter doubled to left center field and drove in the go-ahead run from first. The next batter followed that with a single up the middle that drove in the second runner, giving them a 3-1 lead heading into the Mounties' final at-bat. Mount Aloysius went 1-2-3 to end the game.

Game Two
- The Bobcats jumped out quick again in Game Two, scoring three runs on four hits and one error. The teams headed to the bottom of the first with the Bobcats ahead, 3-0.
- Mount Aloysius got one back in the bottom of the second, as Lexi Wilt (Shanksville, PA, Shanksville-Stonycreek) hit a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Cole to score from third, making it 3-1.
- After a 1-2-3 top of the third inning, the Mounties put more runs on the board. Five consecutive batters reached base, via four singles and a walk, scoring three times to take a 4-3 lead.
- Heading to the top of the fifth, the Mounties got the first two batters to ground out. A single was followed by an unconventional bloop single short of second base. The late throw to first was thrown away allowing the first runner to come all the way around to score, tying the game at 4.
- Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. In the ninth, Greensburg took a 5-4 lead on another unconventional play. After having the runner placed at second to start the frame, a throwing error to first allowed the runner to score. However, while trying to advance to second, the batter was thrown out, 4-3-6, emptying the bases. The next two batters made outs sending the game to the bottom of the ninth, with the Mounties trailing, 5-4.
- In the Mounties half of the ninth inning, Weyant led off the inning with a double to left center which drove home Kayla Diehl (Schellsburg, PA, Chestnut Ridge), who began the inning starting at second base. Weyant's double tied the game with nobody out. After Alaney Vereshack (Smokerun, Pa., Glendale) entered the game as a pinch runner, Cole used a sacrifice bunt to move her to third with one out. Lilley Vereshack (Smokerun, Pa., Glendale) was able to reach on a fielder's choice, driving in the run from third, giving the Mounties a 6-5 walk-off win.

Into the Box Scores
- In Game One, Mount Aloysius was only held to three hits and left just two runners on base, giving them very few scoring opportunities.
- Mount Aloysius used a total of 18 players in Game Two of the doubleheader. Four of them scored runs and six tallied hits. Cole, Holben, and Hanna Minarchick (West Decatur, Pa., Philipsburg-Osceola) each had multiple hits. Five different Mounties each picked up an RBI, as well.
- In the second game, four of the five runs that the Mounties surrendered were unearned.
