JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- On Wednesday, the Mount Aloysius Baseball team hosted a doubleheader with Penn State Altoona, in an AMCC contest. The games were moved to Sargent's Stadium at The Point, in Johnstown, due to field conditions and weather. After winning Game One, the Mounties fell in Game Two.
Leaders
-
Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md., Chopticon) led the Mounties in Game One, pitching 7.0 strong innings, allowing just four hits and one run. He also struck out five batters to pick up his team-leading, fifth win of the season.
- In Game Two,
Ryan Bushey (Latrobe, Pa., Derry), picked up a team-high, three hits, as he went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. He also reached base on a walk.
How It Happened
Game One
- Following a scoreless first inning, the Mounties took control in the bottom of the second inning. They used four straight singles to put themselves in great position and a throwing error to add insurance.
Jackson Kozlovac (Portage, Pa., Portage) had the first RBI single, then he and
Joshua Brown (Manassas, VA, Osbourn Park) came around to score on a throwing error that helped put
Josh Robinson (Woodbridge, VA, Gar-Field) at third, as well. Robinson would then score on a sacrifice bunt by
Trap Wentling (Greenville, PA, Greenville), making it 4-0 Mounties.
- Quade went on to throw up three more zeros to get the Mounties to the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Quade and
Jeremy Iellimo (Arnold, PA, Valley Area) singled to put two runners on.
Aidan Bell (Woodbridge, VA, Prince William County) singled to drive in Quade and move Iellimo to third. Iellimo would then score on a wild pitch to give the Mounties a 6-0 advantage.
- A leadoff triple in the top of the sixth led to an Altoona run, making it 6-1. Quade tossed another 1-2-3 inning, with two strikeouts in the sixth, to finish off the complete game victory.
Game Two
- Penn State Altoona jumped on the Mounties early, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. They added a third run in the second inning thanks to three straight hits.
- The Mounties got on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring a lone run on a
Troy Emert (Rockwood, PA, Rockwood) RBI infield single. Emert's hit was the Mounties' first of the contest. 3-1 Lions.
- In the top of the fourth, Penn State Altoona scored five times on six hits and still left two runners on base, giving them an 8-1 advantage.
- Mount Aloysius added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a first and third, double steal. Wentling scored, making it 8-2.
- Iellimo led the bottom of the fifth inning off by getting hit by a pitch. That started a rally, as the Mounties scored twice before the Lions got an out, all with the bases loaded. Wentling had a bunt single that got thrown away, and scored three runs on the play, cutting the lead to one run and putting him at third base.
Tyler Suder (Boswell, PA, North Star) singled to drive Wentling in, tying the game at eight in the fifth frame.
- Following the Mounties, Penn State Altoona scored three times in the top of the sixth to go back ahead. While only having one hit, they used an error and a passed ball to help score the markers to go ahead, 11-8.
- Mount Aloysius scored in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Bushey walked and eventually came around to score, making it 11-9 Penn State Altoona.
- In the eighth inning, the Lions loaded the bases, with only one out, two of which reached on errors. With a grand slam, all four runners would come around to score, giving Penn State Altoona a 15-9 lead.
- The Mounties would not threaten the rest of the game, having only a Bushey triple as their only hit, falling 15-9.
Into the Box Scores
- All seven Mountie hits in the first game were by different players. Both Suder and Wentling, who were hitless in Game One, picked up two hits in Game Two.
- Quade's complete game in Game One was his fourth of the season. He lowered his season ERA to 2.87.
