Bell's Walk-off Blast Earns a Split for Mounties Against Behrend

CRESSON, Pa. -- On Wednesday, the Mount Aloysius Baseball team hosted Penn State Behrend in an AMCC doubleheader. It was a big, early season matchup, which earned it the AMCC Game of the Week designation. The teams did not disappoint, splitting two, tightly contested games.

Leaders
- Jackson Kozlovac (Portage, Pa., Portage) led the Mounties in Game One with two hits and scored the only run.
- Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md., Chopticon) went 1-for-3 in Game One while pitching all seven innings. In Game Two, he went 3-for-6 and scored a run.
- Aidan Bell (Woodbridge, VA, Prince William County) went 3-for 6 in Game Two, driving in four runs, including two on a walk-off home run, in the bottom of the 11th inning.
- On the mound, Douglas Cannon (Valencia, PA, Mars Area) threw 4.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, to earn the victory.

How It Happened
Game One
- Both pitchers started strong, allowing only one combined hit through the first two frames. In the third, Behrend scratched the first run across. They used a leadoff single followed by an error, to give them runners on the corners with nobody out. A sacrifice fly pushed the run in, giving them a 1-0 lead.
- The low scoring game continued, as it stayed 1-0 through the fifth inning. The leadoff hitter in the Behrend sixth inning started with a single and stole second. A one-out single drove him home, giving the Lions a 2-0 lead. They added a second run, on a two-out single, giving them a 3-0 advantage.
- In the bottom of the seventh,  doubled with two runners on and two outs, cutting the lead to 3-1. An intentional walk would load the bases, but the Mounties were unable to get anything else going, falling in the first game, 3-1.

Game Two
- Mount Aloysius started the second game well. Starting pitcher, Nick Lagnese (North Huntingdon, PA, Norwin), threw a 1-2-3 first inning and the offense put up two runs in the bottom half. The Mounties used four singles to score the two runs. Troy Emert (Rockwood, PA, Rockwood) and Jeremy Iellimo (Arnold, PA, Valley Area) both picked up RBIs on their respective hits.
- Following a scoreless top of the second, Mount Aloysius loaded the bases with one out in the bottom. Iellimo drove in another run on a ground out, giving the Mounties a 3-0 lead.
- Penn State Behrend got two runs back in the third, using three hits. Lagnese got a key strikeout for the third out, to limit anymore damage.
- In the top of the fourth, the Lions used three hits to score another two runs and take a 4-3 lead. After Seth Smith (Mapleton Depot, PA, Mount Union) came on in relief, the Lions would load the bases. Smith picked up a strikeout looking to keep the score at 4-3.
- The Lions would score another run, in the sixth inning. They got a two-out single with two runners on, giving them a 5-3 lead.
- Bell would pick up his first two RBIs, in the seventh inning, as he hit a shallow fly ball with two outs. With the wind playing a factor, the ball dropped between outfielders and infielders, allowing both runners that were on base to score, tying the game at five.
- Both bullpens locked down the next few innings, as each team squandered scoring opportunities. The game stayed 5-5, as it reached the 11th inning. Cannon stranded a two-out double to put up a zero in the top of the 11th. In the bottom half, Iellimo walked to leadoff the inning. In a 1-2 count, Bell hit a deep fly ball to left field. The ball carried just far enough to leave the yard, giving the Mounties the 7-5 victory.

Into the Box Scores
- In the first game, the Mounties picked up six hits compared to only five Lion hits. However, the Mounties committed two errors, resulting in one, unearned run, and left eight men on base.
- Game Two was reverse fortune for the Mounties as the Lions outhit them, 16-11, but committed four miscues. The Mounties did not commit an error in the second game.
- Both bullpens combined for 11.0 innings in Game Two, and only allowed four combined runs. Cannon and Smith combined for 7.1 innings and only allowed one run.

Up Next
- Mount Aloysius is set to travel to Pitt-Bradford, on Saturday, for a crucial AMCC matchup with the Panthers.
- Pitt-Bradford is currently 7-15 on the season and have lost four games in a row. They have played the same two opponents that Mount Aloysius has, being outscored 27-8, in the four losses.
