Pittsburgh, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius women's tennis team improved their AMCC standings with the 5-4 victory over Carlow this Sunday, October 1st.
Doubles:
- Senior
Kierra Mountain (Roaring Spring, PA, Central) and sophomore
Julia Davis (Mount Pleasant, PA, Southmoreland ) would earn the Mounties first victory on the day, winning at two doubles through steady point production, opportunistic volleying and strong hold percentages.
- Senior
Kendra Sines (Somerset, PA, Somerset) shredded forehand returns at one doubles, forcing Carlow to adopt a two back position in their own service games. Although strong volleys abounded on both sides, it would be forced lobbed switches and continual movement around the net that earned Sines and freshman
Caylie Conlon (New Paris, PA, Chestnut Ridge) the 8-5 victory.
- Unable to keep up with the scramble game of their opponents at three doubles, Mount Aloysius would head into singles up 2-1 for the meet.
Singles:
- With Sines unable to continue into singles play, Mountain took the court at one singles for the first time this season, putting on a strong display of all court construction and consistency against the variation of her opponent. Although service holds were rare on both sides of the net, Mountain was eventually able to outlast Carlow's one, picking up the 6-3 6-4 win.
- In perhaps her strongest singles showing of the year, Conlon's prodding aggression at two singles proved especially effective, driving cross court backhands deep into the court and finding pass opportunities on most Carlow approaches. Conlon was able to find strong separation in the second set as her serve came alive, earning her free points en route to the 6-3 6-0 win.
- Freshman
Lauryn Kitchen (Clearfield, PA, Clearfield) had a controlled display at three singles, staying in the driver's seat through both sets with an unshakable backhand and athleticism. Kitchen earned the fifth and final win of the meet for her team, sealing the conference victory for Mount Aloysius.
- Davis's five singles display was also a high point for the Mounties despite not showing up in the win column, with Davis coming back from love-40 to serve out the second set and force a third set tiebreak. The tiebreak went the full distance and saw strong returns and net games from the Mountie, but her consistency dropped just enough down the stretch for Carlow to grab the 11-9 win.
