Frederick, Md. -- Senior
Tanner Beck (Lancaster, PA, Hempfield) played his last career match for the Mounties this Sunday, October 8th, as both the men's and women's teams were able to secure team victories over the Hood College Blazers.
Men's Meet
Doubles:
- Junior
Matt Jacobs (Somerset, PA, Somerset) and sophomore
Zachary Johnson (DuBois, PA, DuBois Area) struggled in early games, finding difficulty securing consistent aggression against opponents comfortable from all court positions. Jacob's return game and Johnson's net play kept the duo in each game, but converting down the stretch stayed a nuisance for the two, eventually falling to the hosts 3-8.
- Beck and partner
Hunter Reed (Shamokin, PA, Our Lady of Lourdes) also started off slow, committing to a passive playstyle early that allowed Hood strong net looks. Refocused after dropping a few opening games, Reed's serve and net play worked with Beck's low passes and movement to break down their opponents, leading Mount Aloysius to a 8-5 victory at two doubles.
Singles:
- Beck continued his final Mountie showing with a strong singles performance, remaining steady against the net-rushing game of his opponent. Forcing low forehands cross court and finding effecting chip-and-charge opportunities, Beck was able to secure the 6-2 6-2 win at two singles.
- Despite dropping the opening set and failing to hold for the set when the opportunity presented itself, Johnson remained strong, forcing his way into aggressive approaches and steadying out establishing volleys to take the second in a tiebreak. A short drop in level in the third set tiebreak would see his opponent take a commanding 5-1 lead, but Johnson dug deep, winning 9 of the next 10 points to win the match 10-6.
- Reed's three singles matches saw a matchup of copies, with both players sticking to forehand approaches, net play, and consistent athleticism throughout the match. A handful of passing shots would make the difference down the stretch, and the Mounties would capture the flight 10-6 in the third.
- Junior
Kaleb Meneely (Spring Creek, PA, Corry Area) would record his first win for Mount Aloysius men's tennis at five singles, finding success at the net en route to a 6-4 6-3 victory.
Women's Meet
Doubles:
- Senior
Kendra Sines (Somerset, PA, Somerset) and freshman
Caylie Conlon (New Paris, PA, Chestnut Ridge) began the proceedings for the Mountie women, carving out an 8-6 win through angled volleys and lob resets at one doubles.
- Freshmen three doubles duo
Maria Runk (Broad Top, PA, Tussey Mountain ) and
Lauryn Kitchen (Clearfield, PA, Clearfield) struggled initially, but found footing through consistency, edging out Hood 8-5.
- Two doubles combo
Kierra Mountain (Roaring Spring, PA, Central) and
Julia Davis (Mount Pleasant, PA, Southmoreland ) would play the closest Mount Aloysius match, struggling with net control but fighting off multiple match points to capture the win 8-7(7) and give the Mounties the doubles sweep.
Singles:
- Carrying momentum from doubles, Mountain would find herself directing forehands into her opponent's backhand while adjusting to the strong gusts of the day. Mixing in short slices to pull Hood out of position, Mountain dug deep to capture a tight first set before running away with the second at two singles.
- Conlon's three singles match was much the same as two singles, with the Mountie forcing balls towards her opponent's backhand wing while grinding out long points. A tight first set went the way of Mount Aloysius thanks to a strong serving performance, and Conlon kept the pressure on through a straightforward second, taking the flight 6-4 6-1.
- Davis would find herself matched up against a strong baseliner at five singles, running down difficult volleys while kept from the net with a combination of passes and lobs. Pitting groundstrokes against groundstrokes, Davis found particular success from the return and backhand side, pushing her opponent deep to force errors. Despite failing to consolidate a late set break, Davis refocused and captured the match 6-4 7-5, sealing the meet for the Mounties.
