Williamsport, Pa. -- Mount Aloysius men's basketball lost to the Penn College Wildcats in a non-conference matchup this Tuesday, November 21st.
Junior forward
De'Von Haggans (Harrisburg, PA, Central Dauphin) continued his streak of strong two-way play, recording his third straight double double for the Mounties with 16 points and 11 rebounds on 5-8 shooting. Haggans contributed to the Mounties' control of the glass, out-rebounding the Wildcats by 14. Despite this deficit, Mount Aloysius's struggles with ball security would contribute to their fall, as the visitors would turn the ball over 23 times on just 14 assists. Penn College would convert more than half of these chances, earning 31 points off of Mountie turnovers.
Comparatively, the Wildcats had strong success moving the ball, recording only 13 team turnovers on 19 assists. However, it was Penn College's efficiency that would be the difference maker, as the hosts would post a ridiculous 54/52/81 team shooting split for the game.
Mount Aloysius stayed in the game throughout the first half, finding success in the paint across the first ten minutes of action. However, six Wildcat three pointers in the same time frame would keep the hosts at a multiple-possession lead until the six minute mark, where junior guard
Will Hagwood (Willowick, Oh., South) would score the layup to cut the Penn College lead to 2. Attacking the paint, the Wildcats would fire back, hitting a three alongside a layup onslaught to push their lead back up to 12 in less than two minutes. The hosts would keep distance from the Mounties through the end of the half, heading into the second up 49-38.
Facing threats from everywhere on the court, the Mounties would struggle to contain drives inside and kick-outs for threes, with the Wildcats lead extending to 18 after four minutes of play. Although the visitors continued to control the glass, Penn College would continue to score at-will, earning twelve more trips to the line in the second to supplement their offensive effort. Unable to keep up with the shooting efficiency of the Wildcats, Mount Aloysius would fall to their hosts 102-84.
Mount Aloysius men's basketball returns from Thanksgiving break on November 29th, hosting La Roche in both teams' AMCC conference opener. La Roche enters the contest 1-4 on the year, coming off a 67-60 win against Muskingum.
