WASHINGTON, D.C -- Junior
Kendra Sines (Somerset, PA, Somerset) won a three-set singles battle en route to a 6-3 dual meet victory for Mount Aloysius.
The cold and windy weather did little to stop the Mounties early on, as Sines and teammate
Kierra Mountain (Roaring Spring, PA, Central) jumped out to a 5-0 lead at one doubles before sealing the match 8-1, matching the scoreline set by freshman
Julia Davis (Mount Pleasant, Pa., Southmoreland) and junior
Campbell McCann (Pittsburgh, Pa., Avonworth) at two doubles.
Mountain, Davis, and McCann handled their singles matches much the same as their doubles, dropping just two combined games as they secured the team victory for the Mounties with wins at the two, three, and four positions.
The match of the day went to Sines at one singles, who fell back early in a straight-forward 3-6 first set. Battling back, Sines snatched the hotly contested second set 6-4 before taking a commanding lead of the third, opening the tiebreak with a 5-0 run. A netted forehand gave Sines the match 10-5 in the third, pushing the Mounties up 6-2 with one match to play.
Freshman
Ali Lawson (Verona, Pa., Riverview) saw a closely contested first set at five singles, with both players holding serve until the 4-3 changeover. The 4-6 first set was followed by a 1-6 second set, giving Trinity its lone match win to accompany two defaults.
