Mounties Sweep Pioneers

CRESSON, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Softball team took to the field on Sunday, as they hosted Alfred State in an AMCC doubleheader. The Mounties made quick work of the Pioneers, invoking the eight-run rule in both games to pick up two victories.

Leaders
- Sarah Henninger (DuBois, Pa. / DuBois) went 5-for-7 on the day and drove in six runs. She went 3-for-4 in Game Two with five RBIs.
- Anna Peterman (Clymer, Pa. / Penns Manor) made her presence felt in Game Two, going 2-for-4 with a home run. The home run was her second of the season. She drove in three total runs.

How It Happened
Game One
- Mount Aloysius was steady in Game One after a scoreless top of the first inning. The first was the only inning that they did not score. Their first two runs came in the second, when Bailee Renninger (Lock Haven, Pa. / Central Mountain) laid down a sacrifice bunt and the throw rolled into right field. The first run counted as an RBI, but the error allowed the second run to score. The Mounties added another marker in the third inning when Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) scored on a error during a stolen base attempt.
- Henninger and Cole both drove in runs, in the fourth inning. Henninger hit a sacrifice fly and Cole followed her with a two-out double that scored Ella Pearson (Tyrone, Pa. / Tyrone) from second base, giving the Mounties a 5-0 lead.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Mount Aloysius added two more when Grace Gardini (York, Pa. / York Catholic) singled. She drove in the first run and while the Pioneers threw to a different base, the second run scored, giving the Mounties a 7-0 lead.
- The Mounties walked off Game One, in the bottom of the sixth, when Maya Capozzoli (Camp Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) delivered a bases loaded single and give the Mounties the eight run advantage. It was her first hit of the day.

Game Two
- The second contest started with a 1-2-3 inning before the Mounties quickly jumped ahead with three runs. Gardini walked and moved to third on a Pearson double, leading off the frame. Henninger scored them both as she followed with a triple. Henninger would later score on a botched sacrifice fly, giving the Mounties an early 3-0 lead.
- Alfred State showed some life in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded and one out, they got a single that left the bases loaded and pushed across a run, cutting the lead to two. The Pioneers added a second run when a passed ball allowed the runners to move up and trim the lead to 3-2.
- Mount Aloysius answered, in the bottom of the second inning, by blowing the game open. The Mounties tallied eight runs on seven hits, including five extra-base hits. Overall they had 12 batters appear at the plate and took an 11-2 lead into the third inning. Henninger, Pearson, and Bella Piacesi (Woodbridge, Va. / Charles Cogan) all had hits that drove in two runs, during the barrage.
- After a quick and scoreless third inning, Mountie starter Sierra Walters (East Freedom, Pa. / Claysburg-Kimmel) tossed up another zero before her offense gave her some extra insurance. Peterman homered to lead off the Mountie fourth inning. Kayla Diehl (Schellsburg, Pa. / Chestnut Ridge), Henninger, and Pearson all followed her and drove in runs, to push the Mountie lead to 15-2. Despite allowing a leadoff hit in the top of the fifth, Walters got a lineout, double play to end the game and give the Mounties a sweep.

Into the Box Scores
- Mount Aloysius pitchers managed to keep the Pioneers off the board in Game One, despite allowing 10 hits. It led to Alfred State leaving nine runners on base. The Mounties only left seven runners on base in Game One, but only drove in four of their eight runs.
- In Game Two, four different Mounties delivered a multi-hit game. Diehl and Peterman each had two hits, while Henninger and Pearson each went 3-for-4. Those four, along with Piacesi, drove in all 15 runs for the Mounties in Game Two.

Up Next
