Mounties Run Into Tough Matchup, Get Swept by Carlow

CRESSON, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Softball team finished up their non-conference schedule, on Tuesday, as they hosted Carlow for a double header. The Mounties (14-10) struggled and dropped both ends of the matchup.

Leaders
- Maggie Cypher (Kittanning, Pa. / Armstrong) tallied a team-high, three hits, going 3-for-4 in Game One. She also drove in two runs.
- Jessica Koptcho (Mountain Top, Pa. / Crestwood) had a solid day, in the circle, appearing in both games and tossing 6.1 innings. She allowed just one earned run and struck out five batters.

How It Happened
Game One
- Carlow got out to a quick lead, with the first three batters all getting a hit and scoring a run, going ahead 3-0 in the first inning. They added a run in the third and a solo home run in the fourth to grow their lead to 5-0, through the first four frames.
- Mount Aloysius got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning on a bases loaded single by Samantha Moschetteri (Spencerport, N.Y. / Spencerport). She drove in both runs and got the Mounties into the final frame, down 5-2.
- Cypher drove in the other two runs, in the bottom of the seventh, again in a bases loaded situation. The hit came with two outs and the other two runners advanced into scoring position, giving the Mounties the tying run at second. The Carlow pitcher made a play on a comeback line drive to end the Mountie threat and down the hosts, 5-4.

Game Two
- The first inning of Game Two saw scoring again, with Carlow putting up two runs in the top of the first. Mount Aloysius was able to get one run back, in the bottom half, as Whitney Cole (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) hit a sacrifice fly that scored Grace Gardini (York, Pa. / York Catholic). 2-1 Celtics.
- Carlow tagged on two more runs, in the third inning, on an RBI double. The double gave them a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, the Mounties answered with two runs of their own. Gardini singled to drive in their first run and cut the lead to 4-2. With two outs, Cole delivered a double down the right field line to drive in the second run of the frame and bring the Mounties within one, 4-3. They would tie the game, in the bottom of the fourth, as Anna Peterman (Clymer, Pa. / Penns Manor) reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
- In the top of the sixth inning, Carlow got three consecutive, extra base, RBI hits, to jump back in front, 7-4. They added an insurance run in the seventh, while holding the Mounties to just one hit over their final two at-bats, to win 8-4.
