Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Mounties Beat Carlow To Finish Spring Season

Cresson, PA. -- Aggressive doubles play provided a strong opening for the Mounties' Saturday meet against Carlow University, overcoming the visiting Celtics 7-2.

Juniors Kendra Sines (Somerset, PA) and Kierra Mountain (Roaring Spring, PA) started out cautiously at the one doubles spot, trading games with their opponents as both teams settled into the match. An increased net presence proved to be the key, with poach attempts giving the Mounties the advantage in both service and return games, eventually storming to an 8-4 victory.

Freshman Julia Davis (Mount Pleasant, Pa.) and junior Campbell McCann (Pittsburgh, Pa.) struggled initially with the heavy serves and groundstrokes of their opponents, who eased through service games while pressuring Mount Aloysius in each return game. The Celtics' pace lost effectiveness as McCann and Davis took control of the center of the court, with net play paving the way to an 8-4 Mount Aloysius win.

Match of the Meet

Following her doubles victory, it would be Davis at the three singles position who would capture the match of the meet. Trading extended baseline rallies with her opponent deep into the first set, Davis began targeting the backhand of her opponent, mixing in level changes to draw late rally errors. After taking the first 6-4 for the Mounties, Davis began to struggle with the increased movement and continued forehand pace of her opponent, finding few openings in return games as the two held service games, before exploiting the now open cross court. Short angled forehands yielded deep backhand opportunities, which Davis took full advantage of, consolidating a late set break to take the match 6-4, 6-3.

Mount Aloysius Women's Tennis finishes the spring season 2-2 overall.
