CRESSON, Pa. -- The Mount Aloysius Baseball team wrapped up their season, on Sunday, dropping the rubber match of their AMCC First Round series to Penn State Altoona. After splitting the two contests on Saturday, the Lions scored in each of the first four innings and downed the Mounties, 10-4.
Leaders
-Â
Tyler Quade (Mechanicsville, Md. /Â Chopticon) went 8-for-13 in the series and walked in four other plate appearances, to lead the Mounties. He drove in two runs and scored five times. In addition, Quade picked up the win for the Mounties, in Game One, tossing 7.2 innings and striking out 10 batters.
-Â
Ryan Lynn (Butler, Pa. / Butler) went 5-for-11 in the series, including a 2-for-3 performance in Game One. He drove in four runs in Game One, courtesy of a grand slam.
How It Happened
Game One
- Both starting pitchers threw up three straight zeros to open up Game One. After a 1-2-3 top of the fourth inning, Quade led off with a double and later scored on aÂ
Joshua Brown (Manassas, Va. /Â Osbourn Park) single, to take a 1-0 lead.
- After Penn State Altoona tied the game in the fifth, the Mounties added two more runs. With runners at second and third, and nobody out,Â
Tyler Suder (Boswell, Pa. / North Star) hit a sacrifice fly andÂ
Gavin Constein (Columbia, Pa. /Â Hempfield) followed him with an RBI single, giving the Mounties a 3-1 lead.
-Â
Troy Emert (Rockwood, Pa. / Rockwood) pushed the lead to 4-1, with an RBI single in the sixth inning, but PSA matched it and cut the lead to 4-2. The Mounties opened it up in the bottom of the seventh, asÂ
Zack Peck (Huntingdon, Pa. / Huntingdon) drove in a run when he was hit by a pitch. Lynn followed him with a home run over the left field fence, clearing the bases and putting the Mounties up by seven runs.
- Quade ran into some trouble in the top of the eighth, giving up four hits and four runs, with the Lions cutting the lead to 9-6.Â
Quinn Fultz (McVeytown, Pa. / Mount Union) came out of the bullpen and got a fly out to end the threat. After the Mounties added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth,Â
Chris Hasse (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop) came on and held the Lions scoreless, putting the Mounties ahead in the series, 1-0.
Game Two
- Neither team scored in the first inning, but the next three frames saw the Lions add a run and keep the Mounties off the board. In the top of the fifth inning, the Lions struck for six runs on six hits, including four consecutive two-out hits, extending their lead to 9-0.
- Emert and Lynn drove in runs, cutting the lead to 9-2 in the bottom of the fifth. The Mounties added another, in the sixth, on anÂ
Aidan Bell (Woodbridge, Va. / Prince William County) double. In the seventh, the Mounties added four more runs when they got back-to-back, two-RBI doubles, from Quade and Bell, cutting the lead to 9-7.
- In the eighth, the teams traded runs, pushing the score up to 10-8. Penn State Altoona added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning, which proved important. Mount Aloysius loaded the bases, with one out, in the bottom of the ninth inning. They scored three times, while continuing to keep all the bags full. The Lions induced a pop up with two outs to end the Mountie threat, grabbing a 12-11 win to even the series at one game a piece.
Game Three
- The start to Game Three would ultimately prove disastrous for the Mounties. Penn State Altoona scored in each of the first four innings, including two or more runs three times. While the Mounties scored twice on wild pitches, in the second, they found themselves down 9-2 after four innings.
-Â
James Rice (Leechburg, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) drove in the only RBI of the contest, on a sacrifice fly, in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, the Lions answered with one of their own and led 10-3.
- Over their final three at-bats, the Mounties were only able to push across one run, but it came at the cost of a double play in the ninth inning. Mount Aloysius left multiple runners on base in all three frames and dropped Game Three, 10-4, losing the series 2-1.
Into the Box Scores
- Mount Aloysius out-hit the Lions in two of the three games. In Game One, they had a 14-10 advantage. Game Two saw them get out-hit 22-14 by Penn State Altoona. Game Three had the Mounties with 14 hits and the Lions with 11. Penn State Altoona also committed three errors in Game Three.
- The Mounties failed to convert opportunities in Game Three, with runners on base. They left 20 total runners stranded, seeing multiple runners left in all nine innings, including leaving the bases loaded twice. In comparison, the Lions stranded just seven runners in their Game Three victory.
Mount Aloysius wraps up their season with a 17-20 overall record. This was their first appearance in a First Round series, since 2021, as they received a bye in last year's AMCC Tournament.Â
